Dental Care
Forest Valley Veterinary Clinic provides complete medical, surgical and dental care for our patients, including cats, dogs, rabbits, pocket pets, and the occasional avian and reptile. Our clients know that when their pet has a problem, we will make sure they are seen that day.
Vaccination
This can happen either in utero when their mother has the virus, or through a bite wound from an infected cat. Outside cats are much more likely to acquire the infection because they have exposure to neighborhood cats. If they are bitten by the wrong cat, they could be infected with FeLV, FIV or both. You can protect your cat from getting FeLV with a simple annual vaccination. Unfortunately, we do not have a good vaccine for FIV.

Nutritional Counseling
Some pets have medical conditions that involve specific dietary requirements. Most of us, however, simply want a food we can trust, and there are hundreds to choose from these days. We recommend a pet food that is easily available locally, that your pet enjoys, that your wallet can handle, but comes from a company with a good reputation in pet nutrition. Notice I did not give a specific brand? That is because there are many good brands out there and we have no objective means of comparing them. Every salesman believes they have the best food on the market.
Comprehensive Examination
EXAM – During the physical exam the doctor will listen to the heart and lungs and check the skin, eyes, ears, teeth, and temperature. They will also look for any sign of birth defects. A yearly exam is vital for optimum health of your pet.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Fleas are the most common external parasite of companion animals. Flea allergy dermatitis is the most common skin disease of dogs and cats! Flea control has always been a challenge for veterinarians and pet owners because the adult fleas cause the clinical signs, yet the majority of the flea population (eggs, larvae and pupae) are to be found off the pet in and around the home. The ideal flea control program utilizes products that target the various stages of the flea life cycle, not only the adult fleas on the pet.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Most dogs are first diagnosed with food allergies when they are young, under 3 years of age. Certain breeds including labs, golden retrievers and pit bulls seem to be predisposed but it can occur in any breed. Typical symptoms are itching, red skin and secondary bacterial and yeast infections most commonly seen on the ears, face, feet and perianal area, but other areas of the body may be affected.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Each of the services described below are included in the puppy package. EXAM – During the physical examination the doctor will listen to the heart and lungs and check the skin, eyes, ears, teeth, and temperature. They will also look for any signs of birth defects. A yearly exam is vital for optimum health of your pet. FECAL EXAM – We will examine a fecal sample under a microscope to check for parasites. This is a very important procedure because not only is it detrimental to your pets health, but certain parasites may be transmitted to humans. DHLPP – This is a combination vaccine which aids in the prevention of five different diseases. Distemper is a viral disease that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital, and central nervous systems. Hepatitis is a systemic disease that affects the liver, kidneys, and eyes. It is spread through saliva and nasal discharge. Leptospirosis attacks the liver and kidneys. It is spread through mucous membranes and breaks in the skin. Parainfluenza attacks the respiratory system and is spread by coughing and sneezing. P arvovirus infects the intestines, heart, and liver. It is spread through infected feces carried on dog’s hair and feet and on human’s shoes. Puppies should have a series of DHLPP vaccines until at least 16 weeks old to be completely protected. Adult dogs require boosters for this vaccine as well. RABIES – The rabies vaccine is given between four and six months of age. Rabies is a fatal disease that may be transmitted to humans. By law, it must be given by a licensed veterinarian or technician. DEWORM – A wormer is given to assure that all internal parasites are gone. This may require multiple treatments. FLEAS – The first dose of flea medicine is given to kill adult fleas, eggs and larvae. HEARTGARD – Heartworms are parasites that live in the heart and lungs of infected dogs causing lung damage and even death if not treated. Puppies can start Heartgard at 12 weeks of age. NAILS – A pedicure will ensure your puppy’s nails are a safe length. MICROCHIP- Microchips are a safe, effective and permanent way to identify your pet. A tiny microchip that contains a personal identification number is implanted under the skin. If your pet is ever lost the microchip will help your pet find their way home again safely.
Intestinal Foreign Object Removal
Soft Tissue Surgery: Tumor Removal, Splenectomy, Gastropexy (Prophylactic in large breeds), Intestinal Foreign Body Removal, Lacerations, Ear Canal Surgery, Stenotic Nares Correction, Mastectomy, Bladder Stone Removal (Cystotomy), Perineal Urethrostomy, Amputations, Stem Cell Therapy, and more.

Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) are still a regular occurrence in the cats we see. The Veneta Veterinary Hospital saw 13 cases of FIV and 11 cases of FeLV in 2011, with similar numbers in 2012. We are especially concerned about these viruses because once a cat is infected, there are no known cures.

The cat’s immune system is extremely reactive against heartworms. For this reason, it is virtually impossible to detect microfilariae in an infected cat. (The cat’s immune system removes them too quickly.) Also, symptoms of infection tend to be more immune-related than heart-failure related. Cats develop more of a lung disease, complete with respiratory distress and chronic coughing or vomiting. Feline heartworm disease is often misdiagnosed as feline asthma. Sudden death may occur just as it may occur in infected dogs.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
A simple dental cleaning for a younger pet involves an oral exam, anesthesia, dental scaling and polishing. Unfortunately, due to periodontal disease and other problems, we may also need to extract teeth or perform other treatments. This makes it very difficult to give an exact price estimate before seeing the patient. A simple cleaning is around $400, plus $68 if your pet has not had a recent physical exam with us. We also offer a 15% ‘Annual Discount’ if your pet has had their teeth cleaned with us in the last 15 months. Please call if you have other questions.

We understand that medical emergencies can be an unexpected financial burden. Our standard policy is to collect payment at the time of services. We are able to estimate costs for certain routine procedures over the phone, but we hope you’ll understand that non-routine surgeries are very difficult to estimate without an exam by one of our doctors.

Below is a list of prices for ovariohysterectomy (spay) and castration (neuter) procedures. This price includes the pre-surgical exam, anesthesia, surgical procedure and pain medications for the following days at home. You will have the peace of mind that your pet’s surgery is performed by a trusted veterinarian at a hospital facility capable of handling unexpected needs.
