Governor Baxter School for the Deaf is a public school offering educational instruction to students in grades kindergarten through 12. The school s instructional services are aimed toward students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing based on their individualized education plans. Its whole language philosophy guides instruction and supports students' acquisition of English and American Sign Language by providing them with instructional strategies that promote building schema and knowledge base. The school teaches written English as a second language and aligns it with skills and knowledge. It offers spoken English in individual and group sessions. Governor Baxter School for the Deaf is a member of the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association and competes in the New England Schools for the Deaf basketball and soccer tournaments.
