When our orthopaedists develop a treatment plan for a patient with an ankle injury or foot condition, their first step is always to consider nonsurgical treatment options first. Sometimes, there are nonoperative treatments, such as diabetic foot care, physical therapy, or orthotics, that can provide relief for a patient’s injury or condition. However, sometimes the patient’s ankle or foot issue has become so problematic that orthopaedic surgery is the best choice.

After medical school, Dr. Chipman completed his internship in internal medicine at the University of Kentucky and his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Florida. Dr. Chipman underwent additional specialty training in the form of a fellowship in pain medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Chipman is a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and the Florida Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and is board-certified in anesthesiology and pain management by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

MRI
Physician assistants and nurse practitioners are highly trained healthcare providers who work under the supervision of our orthopaedic doctors to take medical histories, conduct exams, diagnose and treat bone, joint, and muscle injuries and conditions, order and interpret tests such as X-rays and MRI, prescribe medications, and assist our doctors during surgery. Our additional providers are trained to recognize when patients need the attention of a supervising doctor or additional specialist.

Physician assistants provide a comprehensive range of medical and surgical services, which have traditionally been performed by doctors. PAs are trained to conduct physical examinations, diagnose illnesses, order and interpret X-rays and laboratory studies, write prescriptions, develop treatment plans, and instruct and counsel patients. They also treat injuries by suturing, splinting, and casting. Additionally, PAs may assist in surgery. These providers may see patients independently and/or directly with a doctor.
