Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease characterized by progressive damage to the optic nerve that generally presents with a subtle loss of peripheral vision. If not properly diagnosed and treated, glaucoma can progress to loss of central vision and blindness.

Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, results from degradation of the small central portion of the retina, called the macula. This area is responsible for the close-up vision required for reading and other fine-detail tasks. Although macular degeneration doesn’t affect peripheral vision, if left untreated, it eventually causes central vision loss, making reading, driving and other common tasks impossible.
Laser Eye Surgery
There are basically two types of surgery now being performed. The most common procedure is Lasik, which involves creating a “flap” on the surface of the eye and applying the laser to the tissue underneath. Surface ablation is the next most common procedure, and it involves removing the thin tissue on top of the cornea then applying the laser to the exposed area. Both procedures reshape the cornea to allow light to be focused appropriately. They are equally effective but Lasik is known to have a shorter visual recovery.
Cataracts
A cataract is an opacification or clouding of the lens that affects vision. Vision loss occurs because the cataract blocks the path of light through the eye and prevents proper focus on the retina. The lens is important for focusing light on the retina so that images appear clear and without distortion, and the clouding of the lens during cataract formation distorts vision.
Cataract Surgery
The standard treatment for cataracts is surgery. The opacified lens is removed and an Intraocular Lens implant (IOL) is usually put in its place. Cataract surgery is a very common procedure that provides the surgeon with an opportunity to decrease a patient’s dependence on glasses. There are a number of IOL options available. These options, as well as the risks and benefits of surgery, will be explained by the surgeon.
Eye Exam
Retinopathy is a disease of the retina. Many people with diabetes develop diabetic retinopathy, which damages vision and can lead to blindness. Usually, there are no symptoms of diabetic retinopathy until it changes your vision. When this happens, diabetic retinopathy is already severe. An annual eye exam will ensure diabetic retinopathy is caught early enough to treat it and help prevent vision loss.
