A. Placement and dimension are two very important considerations. Skylights should be situated so that they bring light (and ventilation) into areas that can use them. This sounds too simple but we often see skylights directly over a dining room table or where the skylight makes the television hard to view. Kitchens and bathrooms really need venting units if possible. Also, what seems like an obvious location from inside the house may present a whole different set of issues from the roof...ridges, valleys, and all sorts of obstacles may exist in the attic. The dimension or size of a skylight is also an issue. What seems large right in front of you is often way too small 12 feet overhead. Be careful not to undersize the skylight...placing several units next to each other becomes very dramatic. Including the option to vent your new skylights is always something to consider, especially with the solar tax credit.

For the most part skylights require very little maintenance. The exterior frame is generally aluminum which is designed to provide many years of maintenance-free protection. The light itself is either glass, acrylic or polycarbonate, all of which are very durable surfaces that will last for years but might require occasional cleaning.

A. Ask any roofer and they will tell you most roofing material (asphalt shingles and cedar shakes in particular) is built to withstand the intense heat generated by direct sunlight. But when they are also baked from underneath by a 150-degree attic, they just don’t last as long. Keeping your attic cooler helps make your shingles last longer. Ice dams that occur in the winter months are also very hard on your roof...we discussed earlier how a solar-powered fan can inhibit the cause of ice dams.
Residential Roof Replacement/Installation
Both deck and curb-mounted skylights come in fixed (non-venting) or manual, solar, and electrically venting models. VELUX EDL or ECL Flashing Kits are required for all sloped-roof installations and each kit comes with the underlayment needed to complete the installation. Blinds and shades are available for most models.
Commercial Roof Repair
VELUX Commercial SUN TUNNEL™ Skylights are designed for flat or low sloped commercial roofing applications that are above spaces that will benefit from daylight. This will reduce energy loads and improve occupant performance and comfort.
Commercial Roof Replacement/Installation
These skylights come with their own flashing system and do not require the EDL or ECL flashing kits necessary for deck and curb mounted skylights. Often used by commercial roofers, the pan-flashed units attach directly to the roof deck and require a commercial roofing sealant. The roofing contractor then shingles up to and around the base of the unit. Pan-flashed skylights are available in a limited number of sizes all of which are fixed (non-venting). Blinds and shades are available.

Insulation
A. This is a prolific question and one that sometimes breeds controversy. In the winter especially in northern climates, heat and humidity rise into the attic and when they meet the cold air, which is supposed to be in the attic, one thing always occurs...condensation. Condensation starts several events none of which are desirable. The attic insulation becomes laden with moisture which is heavy and causes the insulation to compress and settle over time, making it less effective. The insulation, when it's “damp”, causes your furnace to work harder. In the winter, when there is generally less convection or circulation in the attic, moisture tends to build up giving mold, mildew, and fungus an opportunity to start. All of these plus the advantage of inhibiting ice dams (keeping the attic cold versus letting warm air rise in the attic, melting the snow cover near the ridge only to re-freeze further down the roof forming the classic ice dam) are reasons the SunRise Solar Fan benefits you year around.
