Bias to African Americans/Black Skin. Called (never asked my race, skin color, surgical problems etc.) and waited over two (2) weeks for a cosmetic makeup appointment. Arrived 04/08/19 very early to take care of any necessary paperwork. After waiting over ten (10) minutes past appointment (3.30pm), Melissa Heys apologized and I followed her to a back office. Immediately, she stated she was hesitant and did not work on black skin, due to infections/scars and getting the color right. Okay? But, she had no problem referring me to another business(es), where there were African American workers. She did not appear interest in the fact that I had already had some cosmetic surgery, but felt that Elite and the super testimonials might be a good place to get any touch ups or further work done. I might add that I would be considered a "very light skinned African American." As I mentioned to her, getting the color right could be a problem for any race, because you don't know how the skin will take it or how it's going to heal/scar? Was she right? Is this business at fault for her actions? You decide. When I left, I stated to the secretary, that Elite should let people know if they have a problem working with Black skin. It's 6:18pm, you read about this happening everyday. I am still very upset and shaking about my experience at Elite Plastic Surgery.
Ola, we apologize for the wait time you recently experienced in our office. It is our top priority to assist all new and existing patients with their visits and answer any questions they may have, which can sometimes result in schedules running behind. More importantly, we are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with our practice and would also like to assure you that Elite Plastic Surgery has a code of ethics that requires everyone regardless of race or other characteristics to be treated in a respectful manner and not discriminated against, abused or exploited. Our practice firmly believes that our professional responsibility requires that we are sensitive, respectful and courteous when interacting with all patients, peers, vendors and any other individuals that we coordinate or communicate with during the care of our patients and our practice operations. We will be conducting an internal inquiry of your interaction with Ms. Heys using the information that you provided. Ms. Heys has been with the practice for several years, with a following of many established patients, including those of African American, Asian, Hispanic, and other ethnicities; however, she is less experienced in the area of permanent make-up for patients with Fitzpatrick V and VI skin types. Patients falling within these ranges have a higher propensity for hypertrophic and keloid scaring and color choices can also sometimes be more challenging. For these reasons, it is in the best interest of the patient to be informed of the potential outcomes and risks associated with the application of permanent make-up, and for our technicians to be honest if they have experience limitations. Many consultations at Elite are free so that both parties can be comfortable with the risks and benefits associated with a procedure, as well as with the technician providing the service. Our physicians and technicians at Elite have many good testimonials about our services in part because we strive to understand the outcome expectations of our patients, and don’t attempt to provide services outside of our scope of experience or expertise. Elite is a smaller practice, and as such is not always able to offer solutions that will work for everyone, which is why sometimes we refer to businesses that have experience outside of our own. Lastly, I would like to assure you that this matter will be addressed appropriately after our inquiry is complete, which will include coordinating with our marketing partners to revisit our marketing materials for permanent make-up.
