Mississippi is named for the Mississippi river that forms its western boundary and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The name roughly translated from Native American folklore means 'Father of Waters. Mississippi experiences a noticeable change of seasons, but temps remain mild and pleasant year-round. Mississippi's temperate climate has an average annual temperature of 65 degrees. The terrain varies from rolling hills in the northern region to sandy beaches along the Mississippi Gulf Coast with forested areas and lakes in between. Mississippi s government consists of the state legislature, judiciary and governor. The economy is built on cotton, poultry, cattle, catfish, soybeans, apparel, furniture, lumber and wood products, food processing, electrical machinery and transportation equipment. Mississippi has a population of 2.8 million and became the 20th state in 1817. Its capital city is Jackson.
