William E. Bowman, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the removal of bone and soft tissue tumors. His expertise involves diagnosing and treating benign and malignant lesions in bone and soft tissue of the limbs and chest, and using advanced limb salvage techniques to restore form and function following tumor resection.Dr. Bowman's clinical expertise includes adult joint reconstructive surgery of the hip, knee, and shoulder. The goal of joint reconstruction is long-term pain relief and improved mobility for people living with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other joint-related conditions and injuries. When possible, Dr. Bowman uses minimally invasive techniques, such as arthroscopic surgery, that have been shown to result in shorter recovery times. Before joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Bowman spent 30 years in private practice. Prior to that, he served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy for three years and was stationed on the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.Dr. Bowman earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and fellowship in orthopedic oncology at the Mayo Clinic.He is a member of numerous organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, California Orthopaedic Association, and Western Orthopaedic Association. He has been recognized numerous times as a Top Doctor in San Diego Magazine's Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey.Dr. Bowman and his wife have been married for over 40 years. They are both avid sailors and have clocked more than 20,000 miles.
