Ear Infections
Conditions that impact hearing can involve was buildup, infection, foreign objects, fluid behind the eardrum, holes in the eardrum, problems with the little bones behind the eardrum as well as nerve hearing loss that involves damage in the cochlear inner ear. Nerve hearing loss can be inherited or acquired from loud noise exposure, medications, infection and the natural aging process. On exam, the doctor checks for redness, fluid behind the eardrum and movement of the eardrum. These are the signs of an ear infection.

Kimberly Kelly, Au.D. is a part-time audiologist here at Lancaster Ear, Nose, and Throat. She earned a Master’s Degree in Audiology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999 and a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree from the University of Florida in 2005. She completed her undergraduate training in Speech and Hearing Disorders at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where she competed on the swim team for 3 years. She has 20 years of experience working with adults and children in a variety of settings, such as a rehabilitation hospital, private practice, and ENT clinics. She moved to Lancaster in 2003 for her husband’s family medicine residency. They have enjoyed raising a family here and spend much of their time traveling all over the country with their 2 daughters, Abby and Mia, for competitive Irish dancing. They are originally from Pittsburgh and are avid Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins fans!

Thyroid enlargement due to over activity (as in Graves’ disease) or from under-activity (as in hypothyroidism). An enlarged thyroid gland is often called a “goiter.”

Patients with a family history of thyroid cancer or who had radiation therapy to the head or neck as children for acne, adenoids, or other reasons are more prone to develop thyroid malignancy.

Ultrasound
Goiters (lumps) require additional imaging studies to determine size, location and characteristics. These can include CT, ultrasound or MRIs. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy may also be ordered in order to take a sample of the cells within the nodule. This can help differentiate between benign and malignant (or cancerous) masses.
MRI
I felt that I had to do something to help my tinnitus. It sounded like a loud tone in my right ear. I came to see Dr. Rizzo to see if there was anything medically wrong or if anything that could be done. I got checked out thoroughly. The MRI showed no tumor or problem in my ear. The recommendation was a hearing aid to help the ear that had the ringing. I was told that it might relieve the tinnitus and that it was probably the most effective thing treatment.
Computed Tomography
Sinusitis is inflammation of the lining membrane of any sinus. Sinusitis is often preceded by rhinitis and rarely occurs without concurrent rhinitis. The symptoms, nasal obstruction/discharge and loss of smell, occur in both disorders. Computed Tomography (CT scan) findings have been established that the mucosal linings of the nose and sinuses are simultaneously involved in the common cold.

Skin Cancer
Changes in the skin. The most common head and neck cancer is basal cell cancer of the skin. Fortunately, this is rarely serious if treated early. Basal cell cancers appear most often on sun exposed areas like the forehead, face and ears but can occur almost anywhere on the skin. Other kinds of cancers, including squamous cell cancer and malignant melanoma also occur on the head and neck. If a sore on the lip, lower face or ear does not heal, consult a physician.

Benign Vocal Cord Lesions. Prolonged hoarseness can occur when you use your voice too much, or too loudly for extended periods of time. These habits can lead to nodules, polyps, and cysts. Vocal nodules (singers’ nodes) are callus-like growths of the vocal folds. Vocal fold polyps and cysts also occur in those who misuse their voice, but can also occur in those who do not.

Allergies
Using an endoscope under topical decongestants in the office, visualization of the nose and its structures is done to further evaluate for infections, polyps and anatomic deviations. CT scanning and allergy testing can help determine the causes and extent of many problems. Antibiotics, antihistamines, decongestants and steroid nasal sprays are all medical options used to treat congestion and infections.
