Oral Cancer Screening

We take a holistic approach to your dental care, which includes an oral cancer screening as a part of your regular exam. Like many kinds of cancer, oral cancer can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early.

Teeth Cleaning
The first line of defense against gum disease is a unique type of cleaning called “scaling and root planing.” In this procedure, an ultrasonic cleaning device is used to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth where regular cleaning devices can't reach: under the gum line, on the tooth, and around the root. Then, the rough surface of the tooth and the root are smoothed out (planed). This provides a healthy, clean surface that makes it easier for the gum tissue to reattach to the tooth.
Fluoride Treatment
Your child should visit the dentist every six months for regular dental cleanings and checkups. We recommend fluoride treatments twice a year along with cleanings to keep teeth their strongest. Tooth sealants are also recommended because they "seal" the deep grooves in your child's teeth, preventing decay from forming in these hard-to-reach areas. Sealants last for several years, but will be monitored at your child's regular checkups.
Dental Sealants
Sometimes brushing is not enough, especially when it comes to those hard-to-reach spots in your mouth. It is difficult for your toothbrush to get in between the small cracks and grooves on your teeth. If left alone, those tiny areas can develop tooth decay. Sealants give your teeth extra protection against decay and help prevent cavities.

Fillings
Tooth bonding can also be used for teeth fillings instead of amalgam fillings. Many patients prefer bonded fillings because the white color is much less noticeable than the silver amalgam fillings. Bonding fillings can be used on front and back teeth depending on the location and extent of tooth decay.

Deep Cleaning

Dentures
Edentulous patients—patients who have lost all or most of their teeth—often experience problems with conventional dentures, including pain during eating and chewing, as well as insufficient stability and retention of the denture. The instability of conventional dentures requires the patient to utilize the lip, tongue, and cheek muscles, in addition to denture adhesive, to hold the dentures in place.
Overdentures
The LOCATOR Overdenture Implant System can replace a full or partial arch of missing teeth with two to four implants. The denture connects to the implants to improve stability, comfort, and bone retention.

Flap Surgery
During pocket reduction procedures (also known as “flap surgery”), we fold back the gum tissue and remove the bacteria hiding underneath, as well as the hardened plaque and tartar that have collected. We may also remove any tissue that is too damaged to survive. We then sew the healthy tissue back into place. Now that the tooth and root are free of bacteria, plaque, and tartar, and the pockets have been reduced, the gums can reattach to the teeth.
Bone Grafting
Autogenous Bone Grafting: Occasionally, the ideal areas for dental implants do not have sufficient bone quantity to support the implants. In these cases, it is often necessary to “borrow” bone from another area of your mouth and graft it into the deficient area. Often, the area of choice is from the chin or in the back of the jaw where your wisdom teeth used to be.

Orthodontics
Invisalign treatment has a number of benefits that may make it the ideal choice for your orthodontic needs. First, in contrast to the brackets and wires of traditional braces, Invisalign trays are virtually invisible to those around you. Second, the clear aligners are removable. This means you can brush and floss normally, reducing the risk of discoloration and decay. It also means you can continue to enjoy your favorite foods without fear of damaging your braces. Finally, Invisalign treatment is typically more comfortable than traditional braces. The clear surface of the trays is unlikely to irritate your lips and gums, and the gentle pressure applied by each aligner is much more comfortable than traditional orthodontics. Most importantly, Invisalign treatment is highly effective and can give you straighter teeth, a healthier smile, and a reduced risk of needing future dental treatment.
Invisalign Orthodontics
Before receiving Invisalign treatment, you will have a thorough evaluation with Dr. Gessner. He will examine your bite, and you will discuss your expected results. A digital scan will be made of your teeth. Dental technicians use these scans to create a series of clear aligner trays. You will wear these aligners every day for the duration of treatment. Every week, you will start to use a new aligner in the series and they will gently and gradually guide your teeth into their proper position.
Braces
Whether you wear braces or not, protecting your smile while playing sports is essential. Injuries to the mouth and jaw are some of the most common injuries received by athletes. Mouthguards help protect your teeth and gums. If you participate in basketball, boxing, hockey, football, gymnastics, lacrosse, martial arts, racquetball, rugby, track and field, skateboarding, skiing and snowboarding, skydiving, soccer, surfing, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting or wrestling, it is recommended by the American Dental Association that you wear a mouthguard.
