The importance of keeping your pet’s teeth clean is great enough that you should always make pet dental care a priority — even when your life gets busy or you are in a hurry.

Nutritional Counseling
Since heartworm infestation can progress extremely slowly, you may not even know that your pet is ill. Symptoms, when they finally arrive, may include lack of energy, intolerance for exercise, weight loss and coughing. By this point, unfortunately, the heartworm infestation may be too advanced for our veterinarian to help your Louisville, Kentucky pet. Earlier stages of canine heartworm infestation can be treated, but the process may involve considerable effort and expense. Cats are less lucky. While felines are able to expel heartworms on their own, their bodies can go into shock in reaction to the worms exiting the body — a potentially fatal outcome.

Heartworm is a serious, often fatal parasitic condition that affects both dogs and cats. This mosquito-borne parasite can severely impair your pet’s heart and lung function, even though it may not present outward symptoms for years. By the time you know your pet has heartworm, treatment may be difficult or impossible. That’s why heartworm prevention is so important for your Louisville, Kentucky pet.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
Our Louisville veterinarians recommends that all new babies receive the puppy/kitten shot series. This is a series of life-saving vaccinations that should begin shortly after your pet is weaned, typically between five and seven weeks of age. The puppy and kitten vaccinations series includes all core vaccinations. For puppies, these vaccines are typically administered in a combined shot known as DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus). Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
What are some common symptoms of an allergic reaction? Both environmental allergies and food allergies generally take the form of skin itching, redness, swelling, and irritation. You may notice “hot spots” of reddened skin or patches of hair loss. Your pet may also be licking, chewing, or scratching at these inflamed areas. Some animals can also develop respiratory issues.

Leptospirosis Treatment
After the first shot is given at 6 weeks of age, subsequent shots in the puppy/kitten vaccination series should be given every 3 weeks until your pet reaches 16-18 weeks of age. At this point, your pet’s immune system will be fully matured. Our puppy kitten shot series includes core vaccinations (DHPP and FELVP) and rabies, which is given once when your pet is four months (16 weeks) old. Based on your pet’s lifestyle, our Louisville veterinarian may recommend that your pet receive additional shots, such as bordetella, Lyme(tick born disease) or expanded Leptospirosis. Bordetella protects against kennel cough, which is highly contagious and easily spread between pets in boarding kennels, doggy daycare, grooming salons, and dog parks. Our veterinarian works closely with each pet owner to determine which pet vaccinations are right for their puppy or kitten’s health needs.

How can “ordinary” allergies create complications for my pet’s health? The most obvious and common example is bacterial infection. If your pet constantly scratches, bites, or licks an irritated patch of skin, the resulting skin damage invites bacteria to invade, which may lead to a serious infection and further complications down the road.
Ear Infection Treatment
Food allergies may develop at any life stage. Puppies, adults, older dogs, all groups may suddenly develop a sensitivity to something in their food. Common Proteins are usually the cause of allergic reactions, but food colorings and artificial ingredients may also trigger nausea, vomiting, skin rash, diarrhea and other symptoms. If your dog suddenly starts vomiting and you don’t see any obvious reason, consult our veterinarian. It is important not to allow your dog to dehydrate. Food allergy symptoms that gradually get worse over time include weight loss, excess loss of hair, lethargy, and ear infections. A 10–12 week food trial using a specialized dermatitis diet will often show that a food allergy exists.

Senior Pet Care
Senior pet wellness exams are critical for all older pets. In general, large breed dogs are considered seniors by the age of six or seven, since their life span is shorter than smaller breed dogs, who may not be considered seniors until age eight or nine. With proper care, a housecat can live into his teens or early 20s, although most house cats are considered to be seniors once they reach their earlier teen years. If you notice a general “slowing down” in your pet’s behavior, along with a diminished sense of sight, smell, hearing or taste, your pet may be a good candidate for our Louisville senior pet wellness care program.
