Teeth Cleaning
While you may not have guessed it, you’ll still need to see your regular dentist during orthodontic treatment. In fact, dental cleanings are even more important during treatment! Your dentist will be able to provide a thorough, deep clean for your teeth while you’re wearing braces, and they’ll also keep watch for any signs of dental decay or disease and prescribe any necessary treatments.

Crowns
A Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance (MARA) helps to treat upper front teeth protrusion and to move the lower jaw forward. Normally, the appliance is fitted to the teeth via stainless steel crowns on the first molars, which provide better traction than bands. MARAs do not have moving parts, which makes them a more reliable appliance than many other treatments.

Dentures
Brush the inside of the aligners with toothpaste and cool water, or with vinegar and water. Do NOT use denture cleaners to clean aligners. Do NOT soak them in mouthwash. These products can damage the surface of the aligner, causing it to become dull and more visible.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
One such condition is severe crossbite. This condition is where the upper teeth close inside the lower teeth. In order to treat this problem, a device called a palatal expander can be used. The palatal expander is used to gradually and painlessly widen the upper jaw and is far more effective when the jaw hasn’t fully developed. If a patient waits too long to come in for treatment on a crossbite, a more complicated treatment, such as oral surgery, may be required to treat the condition.

Severe crowding is another condition that can benefit from early orthodontic treatment. This condition occurs when the jaws are too small to accommodate all of a patient’s permanent teeth. Palatal expansion or tooth extraction may be recommended to create more room and to help the permanent teeth erupt properly. Even if braces are needed later, the treatment time will be shorter and less complex.
