Fred L. Davis Insurance Agency holds a unique position in Memphis based on its service and loyalty to its customers and the same role played by its founders in the history of Memphis. Fred Davis opened his Agency in 1967 and has operated at 1374 Airways Boulevard since 1968. Those were turbulent and challenging times in the United States and especially so in Memphis. Fred, a 1957 graduate of Tennessee State University, was the first African American policy writing agent in six contiguous states and the first African American member of the Independent Insurance Agents of America. A staunch civil rights activist and defender of Democracy for all, Fred ran for and was elected to the first Memphis City Council from a majority white district when it was formed in 1968. In 1972 he became the first African American to chair the council. He was chairman of the Public Works Committee during the sanitation worker's strike of 1968 and was on the platform with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he made his final speech in Memphis that year. He walked beside Dr. King along the last march he made in support of the striking workers shortly before his tragic death on April 4, 1968. His council service was judged by black and white Memphians as steadfast and fair to all residents, and history has affirmed that. Fred is a past president of the Liberty Bowl, one of the very few African Americans to head a major bowl in the United States. The Fred L. Davis Insurance Agency has represented the Hartford Group as a lead company since appointed in 1968. Mr. Davis has qualified himself to serve his clients in a very comprehensive way. Besides being licensed in property and causality coverages, he holds a Life Underwriting Training Council (LUTC) Certificate. He is also securities registered series seven with the National Association of Security Dealers (NASD). The Dedicated staff works as a family and serves all customers, and concentrates on the area of complete coverage for small businesses, helping provide life and health insurance. The Agency installed the first deferred compensation plan (Section 457) in Shelby County in 1981 for the Memphis Light, Gas, and Water Division.
