Radiation Therapy
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is just one of a number of techniques to treat skin cancer. Many skin cancers can be treated with superficial destruction, standard margin excision or radiation therapy. Each method has its place and your doctor can help you to determine which is right for you. But not all skin cancers are created equal. Some skin cancers require a method that ensures complete tumor removal to minimize your risk of a recurrence, while minimizing excess tissue removal.

Mohs Surgery
It is important to realize that Mohs surgery does require some time. The main reason for this is that the tissue is processed in our onsite lab while the patient waits. Most Mohs surgeries take 2-4 hours to complete, but more complicated cases can take a good portion of the day, multiple Mohs stages take time to complete. That is why Mohs surgery is often referred to as an "all-day" technique, though this is rarely the case. As a result, the procedure is scheduled in the morning or early afternoon.

Cosmetic Dermatology
Dr. Lewis has a strong interest in Mohs skin cancer surgery, cutaneous oncology, including malignant melanoma. He is the author of a number of articles on cosmetic dermatology and cutaneous oncology. He has lectured at a number of national and international meetings and has a number of publications on these subjects.
Skin Cancer
Once the patient arrives, he or she is prepared for surgery. The site is identified, local anesthetic is administered and the tissues are removed. Before the patient leaves the room, the area is bandaged. The tissue is then taken to our laboratory while the patient waits in the appropriate area. The laboratory portion of the process can range from 30 minutes to an hour or more. This depends on the size and complexity of your tumor. If the removed tissue is found to still contain skin cancer, at the examined margins, the procedure will be repeated as soon as possible. In fact, several excisions and microscopic examinations may be done in one day. Rarely, it is necessary for the patient to return the next day for further surgery.
Dermatology
Dr. Lewis received his medical degree from the Louisiana State University Medical Center of New Orleans, Louisiana in 1997. He was also inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Lewis completed his internship at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and went on to complete a dermatology residency at that same institution. After completion of his dermatology residency in 2001, Dr. Lewis completed an additional accredited fellowship in Dermatologic Surgery and Mohs Micrographic Surgery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here he trained with Dr. Anthony Benedetto, who was one of Dr Frederick Mohsâ€™ original fellows. He also assisted in the training of dermatology residents at the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson and Drexel Hill medical schools.
