Ultrasound
There is a lot that happens at the first prenatal visit. First, the doctor will try to determine the due date based on the date of your last period and through an obstetrical ultrasound. Obstetric ultrasounds use sound waves to produce pictures of a baby (embryo or fetus) within a pregnant woman, as well as the mother's uterus and ovaries. It does not use ionizing radiation, has no known harmful effects, and is the preferred method for monitoring pregnant women and their unborn babies.

A woman is born with a finite number of eggs, which are stored in the ovaries. The ovaries also make the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which control menstruation and ovulation. Menopause happens when the ovaries no longer release an egg every month and menstruation stops. Menopause is considered a normal part of aging when it happens after the age of 40. But some women can go through menopause early, either as a result of surgery, such as hysterectomy, or damage to the ovaries, such as from chemotherapy. Menopause that happens before 40, regardless of the cause, is called premature menopause.

She then went on to earn her medical doctorate from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was immediately drawn to orthopedics, but after her rotation in obstetrics, she was moved by the experience and the opportunity to support women and their families during their most vulnerable moments. Minimally Invasive Surgery

Robotic Surgery
Minimally invasive Robotic Surgery does not require that the body be opened like normal surgery. Access to the surgical site is gained through small keyhole incisions made by the surgeon. DaVinci surgery utilizes a robotic arm that is controlled by the surgeon via a computer. The advantage of the robotic arm is that it can move in ways that the human hand cannot and it also does not tire, making every move precise and safer. The operation portion is often clean and more exact with a robotic arm than with the human hand, especially for long surgeries. Additionally, there is less blood loss and faster post-operative recovery.
Hysterectomy
Partial and total hysterectomies are performed with minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery. Laparoscopic surgeries, such as laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy or laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy, help decrease scarring, decrease recovery time, and even help to decrease the pain following surgery.
Knee Replacement
Dr. Schaeffer received her undergraduate degree in Bioengineering from Syracuse University in New York and has worked on several projects dedicated to the restoration of degenerative joint function with hip and knee replacement implants. It was during this time that she developed her passion for the medical field.

Dr. Schaeffer completed her residency and served as a chief resident at Bridgeport Hospital, a part of the Yale New Haven Health System. She is FLS certified in laparoscopic surgery and is proficient at robotic surgery utilizing the da Vinci® Surgical System.
