Patch Me Up has been in business since 2000. Originally, the company marketed inspirational books and tapes, organic unscented lotion, and humorous healing boxes and bags to help people recover or cope with an illness using humorous antidotes focusing on benefits for the Mind, Body and Hope. Healing boxes were donated to hospitals and convalescent homes. The name Patch Me Up was partially inspired by the movie Patch Adams , starring Robin Williams as Patch Adams. Dr Hunter Patch Adams is a renowned physician whose story was told in that movie. Having a mutual compassion for people with an illness, Debra called up Patch and asked him how she could start a support group by using laughter. Patch, being an advocate of using "Humor" while treating his patients, gave Debra the guidance and advice she needed to conduct a fun and informative support group that she formed and facilitated at a local hospital. When researching a book she was writing, Debra noticed the fast growing consumer movement toward organic products. While looking for a body lotion for her Mother she noticed most of the body lotions contained potentially toxic ingredients such as laureth sulfates, animal by-products, parabens, dyes, petroleum derivatives that have identified through scientific studies to be harmful. This inspired Debra to research alternative non-toxic ingredients that were Certified Organic and Natural, but at the same time cost effective to the consumer. She was able to source competitively priced, high quality certified organic botanical ingredients that were perfect for the care of the body. Debra has witnessed many negligent actions by health care facilities, providers, too many to mention, not only with her parents, but with friends and family. The frustration and culmination of watching these things that happened over the years came to a point in time when Debra decided to become an advocate, a voice in helping others, with a focus on the elderly. The desire to help those who cannot help themselves. Debra who has gone through great suffering of her own and witnessed distress and anguish in others, is bound to have a great empathy and sympathy for the problems associated with the human tribulations and oppression of life. Debra's desire to help people has inspired her to author a forthcoming book, Patching Life Up , which is based on life stories with an basic alternative approach to a healthy, unique way of living. An excerpt from her book that she subscribes to says' We all have cuts, just some are bigger than others, and some of us hurt more than others'One reason why we need to constantly stick together as a race, especially when we are sick, alone or old. Whenever faced with sickness, disease, depression--- find that happy place, do and go in your mind what makes you smile and bring peace to yourself. Go there as often as you can, meditate there.
