Vaccination
Puppies are given vaccinations at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age. A booster is given at one year of age, and then most dogs are given those vaccinations every 3 years.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Our veterinarians diagnose and treat a wide variety of diseases and problems in pets. Endocrine diseases such as diabetes, Cushings disease and thyroid conditions are very common. Metabolic problems, organ failure, cardiac and respiratory diseases, cancer, intestinal disease, dermatology, ophthalmology, urology, neurology and many other problems arise in companion pets and we can help you get your pet treated in a timely fashion. If we are unable to determine the cause of your pet’s problems, we can arrange for your pet to see the appropriate specialists to get the care they need.
Behavioral Counseling
Behavioral Medicine is an important part of companion animal veterinary care. Behavioral problems are a leading cause of pet relinquishment as well as premature death. From treating inappropriate urination with cats to aggression in dogs, prompt and comprehensive attention to behavior issues when they arise is critical to maintaining your pet’s well-being as well as the bond between you and your pet.
Nutritional Counseling
Overfeeding is the number one nutrition problem we see in pets. Over 60% of cats and dogs are overweight. It is important when decreasing calories to achieve weight loss that you do not underfeed the amount of protein your pet needs. Weight loss diets are specially formulated to provide the right amount of nutrients in a low-calorie form. We recommend Metabolic Diet and R/d for most dogs and cats who need to lose weight. We will determine your pet’s current percentage of body fat and their target ideal weight. From there we will design a weight loss strategy that will work for your pet’s lifestyle and condition. We encourage owners to bring their pet in for weigh-ins to monitor their progress. There is no appointment needed and there is never a service charge for weigh-ins.
Comprehensive Examination
At Edinburgh Pet Health Center, we pride ourselves on keeping pets healthy. Preventive care is the key to avoiding otherwise common problems. Our preventive care plan for your pet is tailored to their unique needs. The annual exam is the single most important component of your pet’s care plan. The exam will allow us to evaluate each pet carefully, discuss specific needs, find medical problems and address preventive care requirements.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Fleas and ticks are very common and contribute to health problems in infested pets. Ticks carry several organisms that cause disease, including Lyme disease. There are many effective, convenient, and safe medications that will kill fleas and ticks. We recommend oral or spot-on products such as, Simparica Trio, NexGard, Frontline Gold, and Revolution.
Pain Management
Edinburgh Pet Health Center provides a wide variety of preventive, medical and behavioral services to our patients. We pride ourselves on our attention to current medical and surgical practices and we routinely consult with experts regarding medical cases. We are committed to improving quality of life as well as length of life of your cherished pet. We emphasize comprehensive pain management, thorough diagnostic testing and quality care. We want to ensure that the needs of both you and your pet are met, and your expectations are exceeded.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
For pets with specific medical conditions requiring therapeutic dietary therapy, we carry several different brands of prescription diets. Pets with kidney disease, food allergies, digestive issues, and many other conditions will benefit from the tailored nutritional composition of these diets. If your pet would benefit from these diets, we will discuss them more fully when indicated.

Leptospirosis Treatment
All dogs are at risk of contracting Leptospirosis, a very serious infection that can cause severe illness and organ failure.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted from ticks to dogs. Lyme disease is spread by the deer tick in the Midwest, and by the black-legged tick in western states.

Arthritis Treatment
Pain Management is an essential service we provide to our patients. Pets cannot always tell us when they are in pain. Cats especially are masters at hiding signs of distress. Vocalization is not common with many pets and is unreliable as proof of pain. Dental pain especially is difficult to detect as dogs and cats simply must eat to survive. Pets with toothaches often just swallow their food rather than chew it. In addition, osteoarthritis is a chronic condition that many pets “learn to live with” but the pain is actually very treatable in most cases.

ECG and pulse oximeter monitoring. A certified veterinary technician is present at all times to monitor all vital signs and help maintain a safe anesthetic procedure. We encourage pre-anesthetic diagnostic testing to reduce the level of risk associated with anesthesia. With accurate information, no pet is “too old” for anesthesia. We are eager to answer your questions and help you make the right decisions regarding your pet’s anesthesia needs.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Drugs such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) can kill cats, and Advil can cause kidney disease and failure in dogs. Antifreeze is well-known as a kidney toxin and must be kept away from pets. Trying to remember all of the toxins can be difficult.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental disease is one of the most common preventable diseases we treat. Over 80% of dogs and cats over 3 years of age have some degree of periodontal disease, and most pets would benefit from more frequent dental cleanings and evaluations.

Wound and Fracture Care
We provide veterinary services, including hospitalization, parenteral fluid administration, continuous rate infusions, nursing care by certified veterinary technicians, wound care, oxygen delivery, thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, intensive care, intravenous and urinary catheterizations, and a wide variety of other diagnostic and medical procedures. We do have an isolation ward for pets with infectious diseases. Cats and dogs have separate ward rooms as well. We have safe, effective supplemental heating devices, including warm water heating pads and a Baer Hugger air warming unit.

Veterinary Surgery
In addition, a board-certified surgeon is available to perform more specialized procedures and orthopedic surgery at our hospital. Those surgeries include fracture repair, knee surgery, triple pelvic osteotomy for hip dysplasia, ear surgery, splenic removal, intestinal surgery, and countless other procedures.

Laboratory Services
We have many in-house laboratory capabilities as well as access to timely outside laboratories so you get your pet’s test results quickly. Our in-house test availability includes heartworm testing, fecal evaluation, feline leukemia, and feline immunodeficiency viral testing, complete blood counts, chemistry profiles, urine testing, fungal and bacterial cultures, skin scraping, cytology and impressions, and tick-borne disease testing. We can attain and process regular x-rays and intra-oral x-rays for dental problems. We can perform contrast studies for urinary diseases as well as gastrointestinal problems such as foreign body ingestion or cancer. We have blood pressure units and an

Dental Radiology
We offer dental prophylaxis, treatment of oral disease, extractions and digital dental radiography. If your pet requires more specialized treatment such as a root canal, we will refer you to a dental specialist.

General Pet Care

Grooming
We do provide some ancillary grooming services for our patients, including nail trims, anal sac expression, ear cleaning and plucking of ear hair, mat clipping, and total body hair clipping under anesthesia.
