Child Support
Step one - prioritizing your debts - starts with making a list of all of your debts and their approximate current balances. Ideally, you’ll also be able to find your interest rates. Then, group them into two broad categories: high priority and low priority. High-priority debts include mortgages, car loans or leases, rent payments, child support payments, and any debts where there is a court order or court judgment requiring payment. Not paying high-priority debts can result in problems like eviction, foreclosure, losing your car, or being subjected to a wage garnishment or bank levy. Low-priority debts includes things like credit card balances, medical debts, debts owed to friends or relatives. Taxes and student loans can fall into either category, depending on the collection status. If you have many debts, prioritizing them further can help but may require assistance, such as from a non-profit credit counseling company.
Spousal Support
The good news is that wage garnishments and lawsuits are halted immediately when you file for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 7 or Chapter 13. When you file a bankruptcy petition, you are immediately put under the protection of an automatic stay. This means that all collection activities must stop. Violating the automatic stay can be costly to your creditors and most of them understand this, which means that they will back off once they are notified of the stay (but note that a few creditors are excluded from the automatic stay, such as those collecting child support or alimony).

Fraud
The monitoring services normally do not tell you if a new wireless service has been taken out in your name, and they do nothing to monitor your bank accounts or retirement account transactions. They also don’t watch for fraudulent charges on your existing credit card accounts. And they don’t stop tax fraud, medicare fraud or Social Security fraud. The monitoring services will not alert you if a bad guy uses your social security number to nab your tax refunds.
Theft
Identity Theft
Retailers commonly respond to data breaches by offering free credit monitoring services. Do they help? Maybe, but probably not as much as you think. They will help if it is too difficult for you to look through your own free credit report and make sense of everything listed in the report. While some of the services offer identity theft insurance, most of that coverage only duplicates coverage consumers already have, under existing laws or credit card zero liability rules.

Bankruptcy
Chapter 13, also called a "Reorganization" bankruptcy, is a repayment plan where you consolidate your debts and make payments toward your debts over a three to five year period. The advantage to a Chapter 13 bankruptcy debt repayment plan, as opposed to working with a debt consolodation company, is that your creditors are legally prevented from collecting funds directly from you while you comply with your Chapter 13 payment plan.
Foreclosure
In the US, new foreclosure filings fell from February to March, but only by 1%. According to the latest RealityTrac data, one out of every 856 housing units nationwide received a foreclosure notice last month. But as you might expect, some states did much worse than others. Can you guess which?

Step two - learning more about debt collection - is also critical. There are many myths about debt collection and what exactly a creditor can do to force you to pay a bill. The more you understand about this, the better equipped you will be to decide which debts to pay first and how best to cope with demands for payment.
