Your diagnosis begins with a thorough clinical exam. You'll receive a full neurological assessment, and your doctor may order an electromyographic test to help diagnose which nerve root(s) are involved. An MRI and other x-ray imaging tests may be ordered to ensure that there's no injury, deformity or instability of the spinal column.
Radiology
Your insurance may require prior authorization (prior approval) of certain imaging and radiology procedures. In most cases, the radiology group providing the service to you will obtain this authorization. If not, TC Spine will obtain this authorization if it is required. Once the authorization has been completed, you will be contacted to schedule the procedure. It is always best to contact your insurance to verify if this authorization is required.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
Diagnosis starts with a thorough physical examination to determine the extent of your condition. Your spine specialist may also order imaging tests like x-rays, CT scans or an MRI. A bone scan might be used to view the areas of spinal inflammation.
Chemotherapy
Spinal tumor surgery. This is often the preferred treatment for accessible spine tumors—those that can be removed with an acceptable risk of spinal cord or nerve injury. It may also be the only option if a tumor isn’t likely to respond to chemotherapy or radiation. You may also need spinal fusion surgery to stabilize your spine if a tumor is removed. This can be done at the same time it’s removed.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy. When a tumor can’t be completely removed by surgery, doctors may destroy what’s left with radiation to ease pressure on the spinal cord. Radiation may also be necessary when surgery poses too many risks or when tumors have metastasized.

Scoliosis Surgery
Surgery. Scoliosis surgery straightens the curved portion of the spine as much as possible and holds it in place. When surgery is necessary, spinal fusion is typically done to correct scoliosis. Spinal fusion welds the spine together and decreases the amount of the curve. Spinal instrumentation is inserted along the spine, which helps the bone grow together by holding the spine in place. Surgery is recommended for more severe curves which continue to progress despite bracing.
