Founded in 1991, The First Amendment Center serves as a forum for the study and exploration of free-expression issues, including freedom of speech, press and religion. It is an operating program of the Freedom Forum and is associated with the Newseum and the Diversity Institute. The center conducts various educational and informative programs for educators, government policy makers, legal experts, students and First Amendment scholars. The First Amendment Center also works on the rights to assemble and to petition the government. Its Freedom Sings is an entertaining and inspiring program that is packed with live music, video and graphics. Additionally, the center conducts National FOI Day, which is an annual program of speaking and discussion by specialists in various aspects of freedom of information. It works with schools and communities throughout the United States and organizes several religious-freedom programs to educate native people about the history, meaning and significance of the First Amendment's religious-liberty clauses. The First Amendment Center maintains locations in Nashville, Tenn., and Washington, D.C.
