The biggest breakthrough in modern oncology in the last two decades was the re-discovery of immunotherapy and applying it in the treatment of lethal cancers including melanoma, lymphoma, lung, and colorectal cancer. Especially in the case of malignant melanoma, immunotherapy has been nothing short of life changing for many patients. Prior to the re-discovery of immunotherapy, metastatic melanoma was a nearly universally fatal disease, and chemotherapy such as dacarbazine had little long-term efficacy. With immunotherapy, most recent data suggests that up to 40% of patients can achieve durable long term remission even in the face of metastatic melanoma.
