Soil Mapping (Perc Test) Sometimes referred to as a "Perc Test", soil mapping is the standard technique used to evaluate soil suitability for wastewater treatment systems (septic systems). Soil characteristics, observed through hand auger borings, along with site characteristics are used to determine the suitability of an area. Based on data collected in the field, a soil suitability report and suitability site map is generated. This documentation can be used as a tool for preliminary site planning, determining development potential, supporting property value, subdivision recordation, and other terrain altering activities. Septic System Layout and Design A septic system layout is a field representation of septic drain lines. Pin flags are placed on contour within a suitable soil area to show the extent and configuration of septic drain lines. Septic system layouts are used by local and State regulating agencies to field verify a proposed septic system for permitting. Wetland Mapping Wetlands are protected natural resources clearly defined by State and Federal Law. Soil Services utilizes the criteria set forth in Federal guidelines to delineate project sites. Positive indicators of hydric soils, hydrophytic vegetation, and wetland hydrology specifically distinguish wetlands. Stream and Buffer Evaluation Often coupled with Wetland Mapping, the Stream and Buffer Evaluation classifies streams located within a project site and assesses their subjectivity to stream buffer rules (Neuse River, Tar-Pamlico, etc.). Like wetlands, streams are protected natural resources. Our experienced staff collects site data through approved classification techniques and field observations. A stream and buffer evaluation map and report is generated for confirmation with State and Federal regulating agencies. Flood Hazard Soils Evaluation Article 14 of the Wake County Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) protects these areas. Soil areas prone to frequent flooding with hydric soil indicators are known as Flood Hazard Soils (FHS). The Wake County Soil Survey is used as a guide to determine whether FHS may be present on a project site. A list of FHS can be found on in the Wake County UDO. The soil areas shown in the Wake County Soil Survey are often much larger than the actual FHS areas found on site. Therefore, a Flood Hazard Soil Evaluation may increase the development potential for a project site.
