Rheumatology
Rheumatology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine focused on the evaluation and treatment of people with arthritis and musculoskeletal pain as well as autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), vasculitis and inflammatory muscle disease. Arthritic conditions such as gout and pseudogout as well as osteoporosis are within the realm of rheumatologic evaluation and treatment. Osteoarthritis is the most common arthritic condition. Rheumatologists also deal with the vast array of aches and pains frequently noted in patients without inflammatory arthritic conditions.

Blood-thinners such as Coumadin®, Plavix® and Aggrenox® need to be stopped prior to your injection. You must get approval from your primary care physician to stop your blood-thinners for your injection. Some important guidelines to remember are...
Emergency Care
Concord Orthopaedic trauma surgeons receive emergency patients at the Concord Hospital Jim & Marianne Cook Emergency Department which is an American College of Surgeons certified Level III Trauma Center 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Electrocardiogram
Patients over 50 years of age or patients with pre-existing medical conditions will be scheduled for pre-surgery testing. The central schedulers at Concord Orthopaedics will work with you to identify the most convenient place for pre-surgery testing to take place. Some of the tests that might be done during pre-surgery testing may include blood work and/or an electrocardiogram. Please bring all the medication you are taking in their original containers or a current list of the medications (including herbal supplements) and dosages at the time of your pre-surgery testing visit.

Sciatica
Back/leg pain, frequently referred to as sciatica, is often caused by inflammation of a disc and/or nerves. An epidural injection targets this pain by injecting a steroid (anti-inflammatory) medicine into the epidural space. The epidural space is the space outside the covering of the spinal cord. The epidural injection may help an injury to heal by reducing inflammation in the area. It may provide permanent relief or a period of pain relief for several months while the cause of the pain is healing. Injections are usually done as a series of three, spaced apart by two to three weeks.
Whiplash
Arthroscopy
A variety of joints can be operated on using arthroscopy: knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, hip. Little pain results from this kind of surgery, allowing most operations to be performed on an outpatient basis at our Orthopaedic Surgery Center. Cartilage and ligament tears in the knee, bursitis, shoulder dislocations, and rotator cuff injuries are all treatable using this technique. Even complex knee ligament reconstructions are routinely done using arthroscopy.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Diagnosis and treatment of spine disorders are important for any individual. Under the care of the Concord Orthopaedics spine team providers, treatment is individualized based on diagnostic condition, age, and lifestyle. We focus on restoring function and getting you back to your normal life style using both non-surgical and surgical interventions including physical therapy, braces, spine injections and traditional and minimally invasive surgery techniques.
Ankle Surgery
Dr. Kurtz showed empathy and compassion in the moments when I needed exactly that. His knowledge, optimism, and care helped me make a decision about ankle surgery. Big thanks to this human, doctor, and professional who made such a traumatic journey easy and less painful, and stressful. He was there to answer every question, even silly ones. If you need a person, human with empathy but on top of that incredible doctor with a top-notch surgical knowledge he is the guy to call in. If I ever break a bone again(let’s hope that’s not the case), I know he is going to be my first choice cause his approach is unique when it comes to the patient-doctor relationship. Thanks, Dr. Kurtz!
Joint Replacement
Joint replacement surgery may be necessary when badly damaged joints no longer move properly and cause severe pain. This most commonly occurs because of degenerative arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis arising from injuries. Surgical treatment is undertaken only after the patient has tried non-surgical treatments, such as medication, the use of a cane, the loss of excessive body weight, and/or modification of activity level. Total joint replacement surgery can reduce or eliminate your pain and return you to your active lifestyle.
Hand Surgery
We provide comprehensive care of all problems in the fingers, hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow, including conditions and injuries affecting nerves, bones, tendons, and ligaments. We also take care of common tumors and growths in the entire arm.
Bunions
Arthroscopy
We utilize a spectrum of treatments, customized to each patient. Surgical treatments depend on the condition, and include the most up-to-date surgical techniques, including micro-surgery, joint replacements, arthroscopy, and minimally invasive surgery. We offer all traditional treatments for many conditions that don't need surgery, including injections, specialized therapies, and casting.
Ingrown Toenails
Hip Replacement
Less than 5 months after hip replacement surgery I was able to complete 13.1 miles on the Jimmy Fund Walk in Boston! That’s what a great surgeon does! Thanks so much Dr. Wiley.
Knee Replacement
Please watch this video if you are having outpatient total hip or knee replacement surgery at the Concord or Derry Orthopaedic Surgery Center, Speare Hospital or Concord Hospital Laconia.
What is Orthopaedic Traumatology? Orthopaedic Traumatology refers to the orthopaedic care of patients with difficult or complex fractures, non-unions (the failure of a fractured bone to heal normally) and mal-unions (incomplete healing or healing in a bad position). Orthopaedic trauma is a severe injury to part of the musculoskeletal system such as a bone, joint or ligament. Leading causes of orthopaedic trauma include vehicular and industrial accidents, slips, falls or sports injuries.
Physical Therapy
Additionally, physical fitness activities can onset a variety of painful overuse type syndromes. Conservative treatments, such as shoe modifications, inserts, physical therapy, medications, bracing, and temporary immobilization are often very helpful in relieving pain. However, when pain persists and limits normal functioning, surgery may be indicated to correct the problem and alleviate the pain. Our physicians tailor an individual treatment plan to suit your needs.
Occupational Therapy
Treatment for rheumatology conditions remains multidimensional, including medications, physical therapy, injections, exercise, physical therapy, occupational therapy and at times, surgical procedures. The treatment is always tailored to the specific disease, the patient's condition and their needs.
