Medical Weight Loss
Follow up appointments: Follow up appointments at The Manhattan Center for Headache & Neurology are 30 minutes. The first follow up appointment after the initial consultation is scheduled with Dr. Halpern. All other follow ups are scheduled with the practitioner of your choice and are dependent upon your availability and our practitioners availability. After the initial consultation, an individualized treatment plan is developed specifically for each patient. Each patient will have their own unique treatment plan which can include a combination of treatment methods ranging from prescription management, injections, botox, infusion therapy, nerve blocks, trigger point injections, vitamin/herb therapy, sleep management, weight loss management, massage therapy, acupuncture, aromatherapy, and mental health services. We at The Manhattan Center for Headache & Neurology believe in treating the whole patient and not just the symptom!

Alice N.S. Wong is a board-certified Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. Following twenty years in book publishing and raising three amazing daughters, she answered the call to enter nursing. Since 2011, she has been caring and advocating for patients at New York Presbyterian Hospital, concentrating in neurology for the past five years. She has done research in aromatherapy for pain and in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. Alice draws upon her extensive and varied life experiences and background to ask the right questions, listen well, and work collaboratively with individuals to manage their health issues. She maintains an open mind and pursues a holistic approach as a compassionate and attentive health practitioner.
Ear Infections
Dizziness is a common symptom experienced by many patients with many conditions. It can be associated with inner ear infections, sinus infections, or impacted ear wax for example. Some of the neurological conditions that can be associated with dizziness include migraine, head injuries, inflammation of the nerves in the ear, strokes, or even anxiety. Often, certain medical conditions need to be ‘ruled out’ before other conditions can be diagnosed. Dizziness can be pretty difficult to treat, but getting the right diagnosis and identifying the underlying cause, can go a long way to finding a treatment.

It is believed if those criteria are slightly relaxed, the number of individuals suffering from debilitating headaches more than doubles. Headaches are the number two cause of disability in the United States, and headaches are one of the top causes for the loss of workplace productivity. Because the medical community has not yet fully embraced “headache” as a medical condition, it is believed that many headache sufferers remain undiagnosed.

EEG (electroencephalogram): An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test used to find problems related to electrical activity of the brain. An EEG tracks and records brain wave patterns. Small metal discs with thin wires (electrodes) are placed on the scalp, and then send signals to a computer to record the results. An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a noninvasive test that records electrical patterns in your brain. The test is used to help diagnose conditions such as seizures, epilepsy, head injuries, dizziness, headaches, brain tumors, brain fog, and sleeping problems.

Nerves can get pinched or irritated in the neck or back, or further away from the spine in the limbs themselves. Common areas where nerves can get pinched or irritated are near the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips and knees. Sometimes, damage to nerves can occur without being ‘pinched’ near a joint. This type of damage can occur anywhere along the nerve, but often starting in the feet. A variety of conditions can increase the risk of having nerve damage including things like diabetes, thyroid disorders, inflammatory and autoimmune disorders and even vitamin deficiencies. Testing often includes EMG/NCV testing to identify the location of the damage or pinching, and the type and severity of the damage. Blood work is also often obtained to rule out some of the medical conditions listed above. Many treatments are available, depending on the type of nerve damage that is present, and location.

Ultrasound
TCD Test: TCD is a noninvasive and painless ultrasound technique that uses sound waves to evaluate blood flow (blood circulation) in and around the brain. There is no special contrast or radiation involved in the test. Physicians recommend this test to determine if there is anything happening in the blood vessels that is affecting blood flow to the brain.
MRI
In people with symptoms such as brain fog and a history of migraines, head injuries or COVID-19 infection, workup may need to be done including testing such as MRI of the brain or EEG, monitoring of the symptoms may be important, and treatment may be available for these conditions.

NEUROLOGY CONSULTATIONS: Consultations at The Manhattan Center for Headache & Neurology are welcome by our providers. During a Neurology consult, your vitals are taken, your history is reviewed, tests are ordered, medications are prescribed, and possible treatment options are discussed. Nerve injections are often used in treatments of chronic pain issues like migraines or diseases that cause muscle spasms. Nerve injections can be especially helpful in treating many types of back pain, including pain from “slipped” discs and sciatica.
Whiplash
Head injuries can affect any part of the head, the skull, the brain, or other soft tissues such as blood vessels, skin and cartilage. They can result in any degree of damage from superficial abrasions and cuts, to tearing of blood vessels, injury to the brain, bleeding in the brain, and skull fractures. Head injuries may result from even the most minimal or innocuous events to the most severe traumas. Injuries to the brain can even result when there is no direct trauma to the head, such as in a whiplash type injury where there are rapid acceleration and deceleration events.

Botox Injections for chronic migraine are provided for patients who meet certain criteria and are interested in this modality for treating migraines. Nerve blocks and trigger point injections are used to treat a variety of pain conditions including headaches and neck pain, occipital neuralgia and other neuralgias.
