Dr. Eric Small is a nationally recognized expert in Primary Care Sports Medicine/Pediatric Sports Medicine with more than 25 years’ experience managing high school, college and professional athletes. His practice focuses on sports injuries and concussion management, with the goal of return to play at a high level of performance. Dr. Small is a past chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness and is active in creating national policy regarding children and sports.
Primary Care
Our group is composed of fellowship-trained sports medicine orthopedists, Drs. Gladstone, Dr Alexis Colvin and Dr. Shawn Anthony, as well as our primary care sports medicine specialist, Dr. Melissa Leber. In addition, because Mount Sinai is a multispecialty center, our patients have access to physicians from the full spectrum of medical disciplines. We use our knowledge, along with the help of our colleagues in Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology and Physical Medicine and Rehabiliation, to offer a well-rounded approach to every athlete’s needs.
Emergency Care
In both academics and athletics, Dr. Leber has received numerous accolades. In 2012, she was awarded the Senior Resident Excellence Award for an Outstanding Teacher, Clinician and Role Model, by the St. Luke’s Roosevelt Emergency Department. As a college athlete at Brandeis University, she was named to the University Athletic Association (UAA) All Academic Conference Softball Team, the Verizon Academic College Softball Team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Team and twice to the All-UAA Conference Team. Additionally, she was a three-time Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Athlete of the Week, four-time UAA Athlete of the Week and two-time ECAC Division All-Star.

Ultrasound
As an Assistant Professor in two medical specialties, Dr. Leber is involved in the education of the next generation of medical professionals, teaching both medical students and residents the art of emergency medicine and orthopaedics. Her research interests include concussions and post-concussion syndrome, knee injuries, professionalism in medicine, and the use of ultrasound as both a diagnostic and a therapeutic device.

Orthopedics
School is just back in session for most kids, and with the start of the academic year comes decisions about extracurricular activities. While sports are healthy and character-building, focusing on a single sport might not be the way to go for every kid. We talked to Dr. Alexis Colvin, an associate professor of sports medicine and orthopedics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and chief medical officer of the United States Tennis Association, about the importance of variety.
Arthroscopy
She was selected as a 2009 Arthroscopy Association of North American Traveling Fellow, during which time she learned cutting edge techniques from experts in the field of arthroscopy.
Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Seneviratne is a fellowship trained, Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical System and Icahn School of Medicine. He specializes in disorders of the shoulder, knee, and elbow as well as all sports-related injuries. He utilizes advanced open and arthroscopic surgical techniques to restore damaged joints, ligaments, and bones.
Arthroscopy
After residency, Dr. Colvin pursued additional training in sports medicine at the prestigious University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with Dr. Freddie Fu, a pioneer in the field of anatomic ACL reconstruction. While in Pittsburgh, Dr. Colvin cared for professional athletes, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and collegiate athletes at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, among others. Dr. Colvin also completed additional training in the field of hip arthroscopy with Dr. Thomas Byrd, Nashville, TN and Dr. Marc Philippon, Vail, CO.
