A 57 year-old male, D., suffered from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), for which he was unsuccessfully treated with medication for six months. D. repeatedly stated that he could not “stomach” his daughter’s husband. Through therapy, D. came to understand how his stomach problems related to his inability to accept his daughter’s husband. He was taught alternative ways of thinking about and relating to his son-in-law. He then practiced a mental imagery exercise to cleanse his stomach (in the River of Life.) After three weeks, his IBS disappeared and after a one-year follow up, his problems had not reoccurred.

Here is an example of how a dream can reveal underlying physical and emotional challenges. B., a 28-year-old newly married patient of mine had a dream in which a rodent made a house in her basement and started killing little kittens that lived there. Responding to a question “What is the first thought that comes to you when you think about kittens?” B. shared with her fantasy-image of her two children playing in the garden with little kittens. After considering a possible message of the dream B. decided to see her physician. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

The domineering theory about depression in contemporary psychiatry is that those who suffer from depression have a chemical imbalance in the brain. This theory was supported by research demonstrating that the brain chemistry of those experiencing depression was different from the brain chemistry of those that do not experience depression. Further research has showed that this “imbalance” could be corrected by giving patients medication that would alter their brain chemistry and make it more “normal.” Thus ushered in the age of medications like Prozac, Paxil, Effexor, Lexapro, Celexa, Wellbutrin, Zoloft and the like.
