One of the main ways to distinguish allergy from other nasal or eye issues is if there is a specific trigger along with itching of eyes and nose, sneezing, watery nose, postnasal drip and nasal stuffiness. Allergies can also lead to migraine headaches, snoring, fatigue, asthma, sinus and ear infections. A drippy nose with cold air is normal and sometimes this occurs with spicy foods and is not a true allergy but a condition called vasomotor rhinitis.

Dr. Stadtmauer is a New York native. He is a graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He then trained in internal medicine including a year as chief resident at Mount Sinai West. His allergy-immunology training was at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is board certified in both internal medicine/allergy/immunology. He is an assistant professor of medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Stadtmauer has a strong interest in both patient and physician education. His teaching activities include training Mount Sinai allergy fellows, writing for Medscape (the doctor’s WebMD) and serving on the advisory board of Medscape. Dr. Stadtmauer’s areas of interest include asthma, latex allergy, chronic cough and sinusitis. He is the past chair of the cough committee of the American Academy of Allergy where he has lectured on the topic of chronic cough. He has consistently been ranked among the best doctors in Castle Connolly, New York Magazine’s “ Best Doctors in NY Issue” and in “Super Doctors” which ranks the top 5% physicians in their specialty. Dr. Stadtmauer is passionate about his volunteer work with the Healthright International Human Rights Clinic where he also trains physician volunteers. He has a number of publications in the medical literature.
Endoscopy
Since allergy, asthma, sinusitis and reflux cause the vast majority of chronic cough in otherwise healthy nonsmokers, testing is first directed towards diagnosing these conditions. Allergy testing, lung function testing and video endoscopy of the upper airway are simple and cost-effective examinations that may be done at the initial visit to the office. The video endoscopy is a key element of the workup of the irritable or “ Hypersensitive Larynx “, a weak vocal cord or a sinus infection with draining mucous.

It includes written or oral health information that relates to your past, present or future physical or mental health; the provision of health care to you; and your past, present, or future payment for health care.

Eczema
Eczema (scaly rashes with redness, usually in skin folds (neck, arms, behind knees, face). This usually occurs in people with other allergies so allergy skin testing and patch testing to check for chemical sensitivities is usually done. Even normal looking skin of people with eczema can turn into an eczematous area which is one reason that moisturizing is so important. Dr. Stadtmauer has extensive experience in managing eczema (both in patients as well as his own!)

A rash could be a condition such as eczema or psoriasis or due to a food, medication, chemical exposure or even a pet. It’s the pattern of the rash that helps determine what it is. Medical history is also a clue to the treating doctor.

Allergies
Stop antihistamines at least 5 days prior to your visit (they can interfere with the allergy testing) This includes Alavert, Claritin, Clarinex, Allegra, Xyzal, Zyrtec, Benadryl and others. Do not stop any asthma inhalers.
