David discussed the importance of saving for retirement as soon as possible. A five-year difference in when you start saving can lead to a significant amount of difference in your total savings when you retire. He discussed the differences between an IRA, a 401(k), and a Roth IRA, and the benefits of each. David also highlighted the different possible asset allocations of a portfolio and the risk associated with each. The students asked insightful questions throughout the presentation, including some questions regarding the impact of student loans and income taxes on retirement accounts. After the 2-hour lecture, the students left with a greater understanding of the importance of saving for retirement, both in the short-term and the long-run.

Investment Management
The Half Day Program has three speakers each addressing different aspects of the industry. The first speaker talked about finding your niche client. The second speaker, a fixed income portfolio manager at MFS Investment Management, provided a fixed income market update. Lastly, a marketing optimization manager on Morningstar's Behavioral Insights Team discussed the importance of understanding behavioral finance.
Mutual Funds
He wished to work in a firm where he could choose any fund from any company. In essence, he came to understand that he was a "captive" financial advisor with a major national firm and wished to be an "independent" financial advisor. David also returned to teaching, taking a position teaching investments and economics at Boston University. Teaching and practicing investing was eye-opening. On the one hand, David witnessed the "Wall Street" approach where he worked, which involved commissions and limited and expensive investment choices. On the other hand, at Boston University, David taught his students how to avoid these expensive investments, in line with academic research. David personally experienced the problem with the financial services industry. He was encouraged to recommend mutual funds that were owned by his employer. He was also encouraged to choose expensive investment choices to boost his commissions.

Paul graduated from Northeastern University in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Paul started his career interning for various companies in Boston such as Bain & Company and Wayfair. Through his early experiences, he built his foundations on financial analysis & modeling and corporate finance. Following his graduation, he worked at a fintech startup, Lendbuzz, which provides affordable auto loans for people without or lacking US credit history. It was there that he found his passion to learn and spread the importance of personal finance and wealth management. With this mission at heart, he joined us to learn more from his mentors at VPF and service the clients to the fullest.

My internship with VPF prepared me for my current role at Apex by teaching me the basics of the financial services and planning industry. At VPF, I became very familiar with financial planning through David and Ashley. The financial plan is vital to the services we offer at Apex and I am grateful that I was exposed to this concept before starting in my role at Apex.
