Interventional radiology will play an increasing role in treating many types of malignancy. DRPC is proud to perform a variety of innovative interventional oncologic procedures. We are able to offer transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), percutaneous radiofrequency ablation and percutaneous cryotherapy. Our other interventional oncologic capabilities include percutaneous biopsy and oncologic venous access services. Patients with nonresectable primary liver tumors and certain types of liver metastases can have improved survival rates and/or improved symptom control with TACE. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and cryoablation are minimally invasive procedures that use thermal energy to treat inoperable tumors, most commonly in the liver, kidney, and adrenal glands.

Positron emission tomography (PET) represents one of our most powerful oncology imaging tools; it helps our radiologists detect tumors at their earliest, most treatable stage. And earlier detection is the key to effective treatment and survivability. PET captures tumor cells “in action”, making it a valuable tool for the clinical evaluation of patients with various cancers, including head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and colorectal cancer. Since PET images biochemical activity, it can accurately predict whether a tumor is benign or malignant, thereby avoiding surgical biopsy when a PET scan is negative. PET is also used to determine the stage of cancer accurately and evaluate the effectiveness of cancer therapy and medication, potentially sparing patients from uncomfortable treatments that are proving ineffective.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound exams do not use ionizing radiation (as used in x-rays). Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.

Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose or treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease and certain other abnormalities within the body.
Mammography
Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the diagnosis of breast diseases in women.
Computed Tomography
CT scans of internal organs, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams.
Chemotherapy
PET scanning is frequently used in regards to cancer, in particular, the therapeutic response of radiation and/or chemotherapy. In the field of neuroradiology this is true of most neck cancers. PET is infrequently used in the setting of brain cancer, more commonly PET can be employed to evaluate for Alzheimer’s disease and those with a seizure disorder.
Interventional Radiology
DRPC has made interventional radiology an important component of our full-service radiology practice and we perform a wide array of innovative procedures. We all perform imaging guided intervention and our interventional radiologists have completed subspecialty fellowship training in interventional radiology. This high level of specialization allows us to keep up-to-date with the latest advances in our field. As a result, we offer the most modern solutions and the best possible treatment outcomes.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally-invasive surgery is the often used term for interventional radiology making the need for large incisions and lengthy hospital stays are becoming a thing of the past.
Orthopedic Surgery
In general, metal objects used in orthopedic surgery pose no risk during MRI. However, a recently placed artificial joint may require the use of another imaging procedure. If there is any question of their presence, an x-ray may be taken to detect the presence of any metal objects.
Gangrene
Also known as peripheral vascular disease (PVD), the disease occurs when scar tissue and cholesterol build up forming plaque inside the arteries. Arteries clogged with plaque result in decreased blood flow to the legs, which can result in pain when walking, and eventually possibly gangrene and amputation if the condition is not treated.
Hysterectomy
Until recently, uterine fibroids were typically treated by performing a hysterectomy or myomectomy. Today, there are less invasive options that interventional radiologists at DRPC can offer.

Breast Surgery
Interpretations of mammograms can be difficult because a normal breast can appear differently for each woman. Also, the appearance of an image may be compromised if there is powder or salve on the breasts or if you have undergone breast surgery. Because some breast cancers are hard to visualize, a radiologist may want to compare the image to views from previous examinations. Not all cancers of the breast can be seen on mammography.

Skin Cancer
Mammography is an excellent tool in the fight against breast cancer, which is the most common cancer among women, other than skin cancer, and the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Annual screening mammography remains the only scientifically proven lifesaving imaging modality for the detection of breast cancer, with reduction in breast cancer mortality up to 40%.

Mammographic digital images are obtained to guide core needle biopsy. This technique is most often applied for biopsy of calcifications or lesions seen mammographically and not seen by ultrasound. The procedure requires local anesthesia and only low-dose radiation.
