Teeth Cleaning
It is very important that you continue to visit your family dentist once every six months, even during your orthodontic treatment, for teeth cleanings and routine dental checkups. If extra dental care is needed, we will be happy to coordinate with your family dentist to make sure that you are receiving the best care possible.
Fluoride Treatment
Systemic fluorides are generally only used by your dentist and are not often available for at-home use. Systemic fluoride treatments are generally designed to help protect the oral health of children undergoing dental procedures. Fluoride used in the dentist/orthodontists office is often a much stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask your dentist before purchasing professional strength fluoride).

Crowns
The MARA appliance is anchored to the molars with crowns, modified crowns, or bands. The lower attachments are fixed to the molars. The upper attachments are removable to enable your orthodontist to make adjustments according to your treatment plan.

Dentures
Keep your retainer clean, too, by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also soak it in denture cleaner as instructed by your orthodontist. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.

Dental Implants
Dental implants are long-term replacements for missing teeth that your oral and maxillofacial surgeon surgically places in the jawbone. Composed of titanium metal that fuses with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration, dental implants never slip and never decay. Because dental implants fuse with the jawbone, bone loss is generally not a problem.

It is a recognized international surgical specialty, and it is one of the nine specialties of dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association.
Tooth Extractions
Most children lose all their baby teeth by age 13, and by the end of their teen years, the jaw bones will harden and stop growing. Orthodontic procedures for adults often take more time and can involve tooth extraction or oral surgery. Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, leaving little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future.

Dr. Baker’s father, Dr. William Baker, chose to become an orthodontist and practiced for more than 30 years in Owensboro. Dr. Baker joined his father in private practice in 1993 and learned much at his side. Likewise, Dr. Baker’s wife Nancy’s father, Dr. Garland Godsey of Prestonsburg, KY, practiced general dentistry for more than 30 years. Additionally, Garland served twice as President of the Kentucky Board of Dentistry and spent many years as an examiner with the Southern Regional Testing Agency (SRTA). The SRTA tests graduating dental students and grants licenses to those who meet its rigorous standards.
