Bladder Cancer
Also referred to as a cholecystectomy, gallbladder surgery is a cure for gallstones and gallbladder dysfunction. It can also be used as a treatment for people who have gallbladder cancer.
Kidney Stones
The parathyroid glands sit behind the larger thyroid gland near the front of the neck and beside the trachea (windpipe). There are four glands; two in the upper or superior position on either side of the trachea, and two in the lower positions. When one or more of these glands becomes overactive and produces too much PTH, the condition is called hyperparathyroidism. Usually, this is first noticed when a patient has a high calcium level on routine blood tests. Over time, problems can arise such as loss of bone density (osteoporosis), fatigue, and kidney stones. About 1% or 1 in 100 people will develop this disease over the course of their lifetime and require surgery to treat it. Anyone can develop hyperparathyroidism at any age. However, it is more common in women than in men and more common in older adults than in younger people.

Some thyroid nodules present as a single lump on or in the thyroid. In other cases, many nodules will develop and cause enlargement of the entire gland, known as a multinodular goiter. Ultrasound

Breast cancer is often first diagnosed through regular Mammograms. Official recommendations for when to begin mammograms vary depending on a woman’s risk factors, but they should usually begin with routine screening between age 40 and 50. Mammograms detect breast cancer by looking for concerning patterns of density or suspicious calcium deposits. Early breast cancer such as DCIS, or precancerous tissue (atypia), is best detected with mammography. Ultrasound is used to look closer at areas of concern, and help in performing a needle biopsy (sampling a small area of tissue) to confirm cancer is present. Breast MRI is another way of looking at the breast, and is very good at finding a small invasive cancer, but not very sensitive for finding in-situ ones. Depending on the situation, all three types of imaging tests may be used. A preliminary needle biopsy is almost always necessary to confirm the presence and type of cancer before proceeding with surgery or other treatments. For patients at risk for metastatic spread, a PET/CT scan can help find areas of cancer not directly connected with the breast or surrounding lymph nodes.
Computed Tomography
If your doctor suspects that you have diverticular disease, they will perform a physical exam. Based on your symptoms, he or she may order tests to rule out other medical conditions. These may include a complete blood count, abdominal X-rays, and a CT scan.
Chemotherapy
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, affecting one in eight women in their lifetime. Fortunately, it is usually fully treatable for a cure. Surgery is usually required as a major part of treatment, and having an experienced and expert Surgeon is vitally important to ensure the best care and outcome. Other treatments are often necessary including radiation, anti-hormonal medication, and chemotherapy depending on the type and extent of disease. The goal of treatment is to have a patient become cancer free with the best possible cosmetic results and the minimum lifestyle impairment.
Radiation Therapy
If your Cushing's syndrome is caused by tumors, it may be necessary to perform surgery. Surgical removal of a gland will stop the overproduction of cortisol. Your doctor may also recommend chemotherapy or radiation therapy if tumors are malignant.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Gatmaitan has been practicing minimally invasive surgery for the past ten years and joined The Surgery Group in 2009. His particular areas of interest include laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures for obesity, laparoscopic treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (only surgeon in the area performing LINX procedure), laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair, laparoscopic colon resection and other laparoscopic gastrointestinal procedures.

Cancer (or oncologic) surgery refers to any surgical procedure performed in the diagnosis or treatment of cancer. Surgical techniques have advanced dramatically. Many surgeries can be performed using laparoscopy. This means smaller incisions, less pain, quicker healing and less scarring.

Plastic Surgeons

Breast Reconstruction
Breast cancer is treated specifically to each patient’s situation, taking into account the tumor type, size, location, and possible spread into lymph nodes. In each case, every effort is made to provide the very best cosmetic results while still fully treating the cancer. Some very small tumors can be cured with surgery alone, removing the area completely with a lumpectomy. Radiation is added after most lumpectomies to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence in the breast. One or more lymph nodes are usually sampled during surgery to determine if cancer has spread, with the aid of an injected tracer dye, known as a sentinel lymph node biopsy. For cancers that are high risk or have positive lymph nodes, chemotherapy is given to reduce the chance of recurrence at a distant site (metastasis). Some cancers are too large or spread out to be removed with a lumpectomy. Removal of the breast tissue completely (mastectomy) is used in these cases. Often the breast surgeon will work with a plastic surgeon to restore a normal appearance (breast reconstruction), and many times this can be done preserving completely the nipple and areola. In these situations, the surgery can be barely detectable after recovery. Another option for large cancers is to give chemotherapy first, before surgery. This will shrink the tumor and allow for a smaller surgery at a later time. For HER-2 positive and Triple negative cancers, chemotherapy is particularly important. A medication to block or reduce estrogen is given to patients with cancer positive for this receptor. These are administered as a daily pill and are very effective at preventing cancer from recurring.
Breast Surgery
Dr. Jada Leahy is a board-certified General Surgeon, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Originally from Athens, Tennessee, Dr. Leahy attended high school here locally at Pine Forest. After completing undergraduate studies in Neurobiological Sciences at the University of Florida, she attended Florida State Medical School including her last two years of clinical studies, here at the Pensacola Campus. She is a Navy Veteran and served as the General Surgeon aboard CVN 77 George H W Bush prior to being stationed at Naval Hospital Pensacola. During her Naval career, she attended the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute Patient Safety Leadership Academy, served as the Executive Committee Chair for Naval Hospital Pensacola and participated as the physician escort for the Joint Commission Accreditation. After almost 10 years of military service, Dr. Leahy chose to continue her surgical career in Pensacola area. She remains active in medical education as a faculty member at Florida State College of Medicine. She enjoys performing the full spectrum of general surgery including treatment of skin cancer, benign and malignant breast disease, endocrine disorders, gallbladder disease, intestinal and colorectal disorders including colorectal cancer, hemorrhoids, and all types of abdominal and inguinal hernias. Dr. Leahy has a special interest in minimally invasive techniques for colon and rectal surgery as well as breast surgery. She is committed to providing high quality, patient-centered surgical care personalized to the needs of each individual patient. She is active in the local Escambia County Medical Society and understands the dynamic and unique needs of the Panhandle patient population. She enjoys spending off time with her husband and young children and is frequently seen participating in local races/5k’s as well as women’s health events such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Hernias occur when tissue or an organ pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. These weak spots can be repaired with surgery to strengthen the area and prevent this. While some hernias produce no symptoms, others can cause pain or bulges. In some cases, a hernia can lead to severe organ damage if it is not repaired. Hernia surgery can be performed through open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, or robotic assisted. With open surgery, an incision is made in the affected area and the protruding tissue is pushed in before the area is closed. Laparoscopic and robotic assisted surgery involves small incisions where a small fiber-optic camera is inserted to guide the repair. In most cases, we can attach a strong surgical mesh that will strengthen the area and prevent further issues. Our board-certified surgeons have years of experience with hernia repair and can provide professional care in a relaxed and calming environment.
Bariatric Surgery
Dr. Lord was previously Director of Minimally Invasive General and Bariatric Surgery at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. Memberships in professional and scientific societies include the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Bariatric Surgeons (ASBS) and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Dr. Lord is also a physician teaching proctor for the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons.
