Crowns
Each tooth consists of two parts: the crown and the root. The crown is visible in the mouth while the roots that support the tooth are firmly anchored in the jaw bone. The gingiva, or gum tissue, is a protective skin that clings to the necks of the teeth and covers the bone that holds the teeth. The molar teeth are located in the back of the mouth and may have two or three roots. The other teeth have one root. The last of the molar teeth, called third molars or wisdom teeth, develop in the bones of the upper and lower jaws and are the last teeth to form and erupt into the mouth (figure 1). There are usually four wisdom teeth, one on the upper and lower on each side of the mouth. They are the teeth farthest back in the mouth and they may also be the most difficult to clean even if they erupt into the proper position.
Dental Bonding

Root Canal Treatment
Isolated injuries to teeth are quite common and may require the expertise of more than one dental specialist. Oral surgeons are usually involved in treating fractures in the supporting bone or in replanting teeth which have been displaced or “knocked out”. These types of injuries are treated by stabilizing by wiring or bonding teeth together. If a tooth is “knocked out,” it should be placed in salt water or milk. The sooner the tooth is re-inserted into the dental socket, the greater the possibility for the survival of the tooth. The patient should see a dentist or oral surgeon as soon as possible and never attempt to “wipe the tooth off” because the remnants of the ligament which hold the tooth in the jaw are attached and are vital to the success of replanting the tooth. Other dental specialists may be called upon, such as endodontists, who perform root canal therapy, and restorative dentists, who may need to repair or rebuild fractured teeth. If the injured teeth cannot be saved or repaired, dental implants are often the course of treatment as replacements for missing teeth.

Dentures
Overall, cancer involving the head and neck region represents only about 5% of all malignancies reported each year. According to the American Cancer Society, the he most common risk factor is the chronic use of tobacco and alcohol. Other factors include poor oral hygiene, irritation caused by ill fitting dentures and rough surfaces on teeth, poor nutrition or any combination of the above. Studies have shown that the death rate from oral cancer is about four times greater for cigarette smokers than that for nonsmokers. Those at an especially high risk of contracting oral cancer are males over the age of forty who participate in a combination of heavy drinking and smoking or use smokeless tobacco. The early detection and prompt treatment of any pathology may be the key to a complete recovery.

What should a patient look for in an oral surgery office for assurance that the staff are taking proper precautions to prevent cross-infection?
Jaw Surgery
Multiple surgeries involving the lip, roof of the mouth and jaw restricts growth of the upper jaw, which can create a deficiency in the midface. Orthognathic Surgery to advance the upper jaw is completed in the teenage years to correct the bite. Additional surgical revisions may be required on the lip and nose to complete cosmetics and function.

Tooth Extractions

Orthodontics
Orthognathic surgery usually first involves a period of nine to fourteen months of orthodontic treatment, meaning braces. The orthodontist plays a big part in the success of treatment. Orthodontic appliances are not removed prior to surgery and serve as an aid to the surgeon during the surgical procedure. There is usually a post-surgical period of orthodontics that varies from one patient to the next. Orthognathic surgery is a hospital based operation. The patient is admitted on the day of surgery and can expect to be discharged the day after the surgery is performed. The surgical procedures today are usually performed completely within the mouth. At one time, the patient’s teeth were wired shut for seven weeks. Today, the patient can usually resume jaw movement such as speaking, yawning and coughing almost immediately. The limitation of jaw function asked of nearly all patients is to soften their diet for four to six weeks following surgery to allow for a period of bony healing.
Braces
The orthodontist may request that wisdom teeth be removed prior to braces because they may interfere with straightening the other teeth. Finally, an impacted wisdom tooth in the lower jaw occupies space that is usually filled by bone. This creates an inherent area of weakness in the lower jaw which may make it more susceptible to fractures (broken jaw).
