General Info
My Mom is Martha Vinyard, and I am thankful that she is alive and a breast cancer survivor. In April of this year, I will be riding 800 miles from Phoenix to Amarillo on Route 66 to raise donations for others with Breast Cancer, in honor of my Mom. Please help me raise my goal of $100,000 so that we can give others the opportunity to fight and end breast cancer forever! The ride, it's not really about me. I've never had cancer. I've never felt the nausea of chemo, I've never had radiation treatments and I've never felt the fear that one must feel when the doctor delivers the bad news. The news that you then have to deliver to your family. And this ride, it's not for me. It's for my Mom, and for all of the others who can check YES to all the above. I was raised by very caring parents, who gave me and my two younger brothers a wonderful and happy childhood, with lots of love. They have both made many sacrifices for the three of us, and now I feel like it's my turn to return the favor. In truth, I would ride to the Moon if it meant finding a cure. When my Mom had cancer, she had a cancer insurance policy that paid for a large portion of her treatments. However, in most instances, it took her 9-12 months just to get the treatments paid for, and she had the best insurance, that portions of are no longer even available. There were many hiccups along the way, and it created another "fight" that she had to endure on top of her fight to live and beat the disease. For many of the towns I am riding through, they have very small populations with little resources in the way of health care. The Harrington Cancer Center, which took great care of my Mom, has a mobile unit that travels to many of the small towns in the surrounding area between TX and NM, so that everyone gets their chance to fight. I have also signed up with Susan G. Komen of Phoenix to ensure that the community I currently live in also has funds to facilitate equal opportunities for those less fortunate, or have no insurance. Obviously pre-screening and a healthy lifestyle is our first line of defense, so it's a huge priority that we never have breast cancer in the first place. Money raised will be split between SGK and HCC to help those who may not have the money or resources to help themselves. If my Mom struggled with insurance, then what kind of battle must those without insurance endure? Between SKG and the mobile units sent out by HCC, we can reach more who will get that chance. Without constant funding, these opportunities are lost. This is my reason. Cancer does not discriminate, and it doesn't give up. So I can't either. It's the most important thing I've ever done in my life, and I really need the support of the people.
