Southern Char Steakhouse

I had the southern char cheeseburger with bacon on it. it was great for the price!!! but they should add lil more French fries on the plate. but i say this is a great place

We ate at this restaurant a couple of weeks ago and were surprisingly impressed, the food was cooked as requested for all 4 people in our party, the bread is absolutely great and the staff were very helpful and friendly....in order to be competitive with other steakhouses I do believe a salad should be offered with the meal at no extra charge....just up the price of the meal $2 and you will still be in line with other restaurants....it would also be nice if some form of bottled water was offered.....despite being told that this restaurant was somewhat expensive, we found the prices to be comparable and the food much better than other steakhouses....nice to have a good restaurant in Picayune, since there are so few places to dine out here.....

Unfortunately, I would have to agree with this review in that I was very disappointed in my meal. I would love to spend my money at local restaurants in Picayune as opposed to driving to Slidell or further, however I believe that Southern Char will have to step it up a bit in order to see repeat customers.



My experience was this:



The bread had a good flavor but would have been better warmed and either way should be served with butter, or at least the offer of butter should be there.



We had the stuffed mushrooms, which had a good taste but mushrooms themselves were barely warm to cold on the inside....not good. We sent them back, and were given the our same dish back with the half cut mushrooms (not very good customer service) that were just warm at best.



I had the french onion soup, and there was no broth at all in the bowl, just a slight amount of onions, bread and cheese. That dish was warm and the cheese melted. Perhaps a different kind of deeper bowl instead of a salad bowl would help to allow more actual soup in the bowl, as well as a bowl that can go through the oven for a perfectly melted cheese on top.



Baked Potato - average



Steamed Vegetables - terrible! The combination of carrots/greenbeans/waxed beans were so tough that they couldn't be pierced with a fork, once bitten they were mushy, and were sprinkled with some sort of italian seasoning....awful!



Steak - the steaks were cooked to order, perfect in that respect...however they were tough and not very tasty. Perhaps some sort of light seasoning would help.



I hope that perhaps in the months to come all the kinks will be worked out and they will have a successful business. I am glad we are getting some new restaurants. However, in order to charge upscale prices, you must offer a well tasting, quality meal. I may give them another try, but will wait a while before doing so.

Ate there last night and had a wonderful experience. Steak was tender 'juicy cooked to order and tasted great. Our side was an over stuffed potato that tasted great. Side salad was only $!.50 and came with home made croutons, Yummy. Waiter staff was excellent. Delivery of food was timely. Overall we will be back. Nice to have an upscale restaurant in Picayune. Our compliments to the chef.

I waited 2-days after their Grand Opening for at least some of the bugs to be worked out. Where to start ... no chicken dinner, only on a salad; expect to pay $3+ for a side salad / soup.



BEST PART – the bread. What a flavor. Just remember to ask for butter. Bread was included with the soup and salad, but the butter was missing the entire time.



HOUSE Salad – means lettuce from the club store bag of iceberg lettuce. There was not a single slice of tomato or cucumber, not even a single crouton. I was even lucky enough to get the lettuce core.



CRAB / CRAWFISH / SHRIMP Soup – has a pretty good taste. I would have liked to have discovered more than a single shrimp. The soup temperature was barely above lukewarm.



FRENCH ONION Soup – someone forgot the onions. The cheese was crusted very well as it was the last step. The soup was cold to where even melting the cheese did not warm up the soup. It seemed more like consume soup.



POTATO’S – Baked & Sweet – are being kept in steamers as the bottom of the potatoes were hot, and the inside potato temperature was not even enough to melt whipped butter.



RIBEYE – 20 & 14 ounce sizes – would have tasted better if there was seasoning put on them. And TOUGH was something I did not expect at all. Although we ordered 2 different sizes, they looked identical. The requested med-rare steak was barely above tar-tar.



FILET – temperature was warm, but TENDER. Again, seasonings were missing.

Food temperature has to improve.

Seasoning has to be added to most of their dishes.

There were servers running all around … not seem to be doing anything.

There was really no chit-chat with the patrons.

It was NOT a cozy dinner experience.

Prices way too high for what you get … 3 ppl = $85.00

Go up to Exit 6 for a far better steak & dining experience.
