Want to get taken advantage of? This is the place to go! Of course, what would you expect from a large chain car repair corporation?
I went in a few weeks ago to have my A/C system checked out... I figured there might be a gasket that had dry-rotted and let the refrigerant leak out. They told me, "there is a $97 diagnostic fee but if you have your vehicle repaired here, we waive it". I agreed, knowing that the cost shouldn't be more than say $150... Well, an employee named Brian called me about an hour later with a quote of $400! I thought for a second I might be on a scripted hidden camera show, but no, he was being serious.
In the end, I had to pay over one hundred dollars to get my car out of there, thanks to the "diagnostic charge". Yes, that's right, they charged me sales tax on a non-tangible item.
Here's the sick part... I had it checked out by a few local mechanics only to find the fix costs about $120-140 out the door.
Where did Brian from AAMCO get this outrageous quote of $400? He explained that to replace the gaskets there would be many hours of labor. My new mechanic took a look and had it done in twenty minutes after the parts arrived.
I wrote to the store in an email explaining this, to which I got a response from the store owner, Vince. He claimed he was willing to resolve my issue. I replied asking how we would move forward from here. That was a week ago and I've heard nothing back.
They realize they tried to rip off the wrong person and now are trying to hide from communicating with me. I've contacted the appropriate individuals at the Better Business Bureau as well as AAMCO's corporate campus.
The bottom line is this: They are the typical sleazy grease-monkeys that try to rip off every soul that walks through the doors. Sadly, many many folks fall for the overpriced "repairs". Steer clear from this at all costs. You will be glad you did.
