General Info
Breen Energy Solutions (BES) is a Pennsylvania Limited Liability Corporation providing technology and services to the Fossil Fuel Power Generation Industry. The company was formed in 2002 with the specific intent of developing new ideas and technologies that would help utilities manage their emissions and the Balance-Of-Plant impacts resulting from their emissions control technologies. Over the last six years, BES has commercialized several technologies in the Acid Gas Management field including the AbSensor - SO3/AbS measurement system, the Breen Online Air Heater Model and the Dynamic Speed Controlled (DySC) Air Heater Sootblowing technology. BES has recently launched a new business division supplying Dry Sorbent Injection systems for SO3 mitigation using Lime, Trona and other dry Sorbents as well as a wet sorbent injection business for the injection of Magnesium Oxide for slag control and SO3 mitigation. During this time, BES has formed relationships and technology licensing arrangements with EPRI, Duke Energy and Lubrizol. Further BES has developed corporate supply arrangements and contracts with various utilities such as Progress Energy, Duke Energy, DP&L and AES. The name Breen comes from the last name of our Chief Scientist and President, Dr. Bernard Breen. Dr. Breen has been involved with the control of power plant emissions since 1960. He is considered a pioneer in the field of NOx reduction and is an inventor on over 30 patents. Dr. Breen worked with the Gas Technology Institute in the early 90s to invent a new NOx reduction technology called Fuel Lean Gas Reburn (FLGR). He then formed a joint venture between his company Energy Systems Associates (ESA) Equipment and Controls, Inc (ECI), a process controls technology company. This joint venture, ESA-Environmental Solutions, rolled out 16 commercial installations of the FLGR technology that injects Natural Gas in the upper furnace for NOx reduction. When the price of Natural Gas became prohibitive the commercialization of this technology also stalled. Following on the heels of this success, Dr. Breen joined forces with the principals at ECI to form Breen Energy Solutions to develop and market new ideas and technologies in the Acid Gas Management field. He sold his existing business to the employees and focused all his energies on the new venture. In the period 2002 to 2004, BES engaged in primary research in the field of measurement technology: Ammonium Bisulfate, SO3, Boiler Heat Flux and Boiler Corrosion; Hg control technology: High-Temp kinetic oxidation, In-duct Dry Adsorption and In-Situ Active Carbon generation and NOx technology: Carbon Water Slurry injection, Oil-Water emulsion injection and Biomass Water Slurry injection. As part of this development effort numerous field demonstrations were conducted on a pilot scale at the DOE NETL Western Research Institute as well as large scale demonstrations at AES-Beaver Valley, Reliant Cheswick, Penn State Boiler House and Duke Allen station. These included a PA Department of Environmental Protection funded project at the Penn State Stoker Boiler, a DOE funded project at AES-Beaver Valley and an EPRI funded demonstration at Duke Allen station. BES was also awarded project funding under the DOE mercury Round III solicitation. BES currently has one project funded by the EPA for a Hg technology demonstration at the Research Triangle Park facility as well as a joint project with Lhoist, formerly Chemical Lime, at the EPA-RTP facility for an HCl technology demonstration. BES has the experience to conduct Research and Development, technology commercialization including working with NFPA, systems engineering and integration and field deployment.
