Dental Examination
Dental radiographs (x-rays) are essential, preventative, diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam. Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete an accurate treatment plan. Without x-rays, problem areas may go undetected.
X-rays
Digital radiography (digital x-ray) is the latest technology used to take dental x-rays. This technique uses an electronic sensor (instead of x-ray film) that captures and stores the digital image on a computer. This image can be instantly viewed and enlarged helping the dentist and dental hygienist detect problems easier. Digital x-rays reduce radiation 80-90% compared to the already low exposure of traditional dental x-rays.

Dental Sealants
A sealant is a thin, plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of molars, premolars and any deep grooves (called pits and fissures) of teeth. More than 75% of dental decay begins in these deep grooves. Teeth with these conditions are hard to clean and are very susceptible to decay. A sealant protects the tooth by sealing deep grooves, creating a smooth, easy to clean surface.

Fillings
There are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. You and your dentist can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth. Composite fillings, along with silver amalgam fillings, are the most widely used today. Because composite fillings are tooth colored, they can be closely matched to the color of existing teeth, and are more aesthetically suited for use in front teeth or the more visible areas of the teeth.
Resin Composite
Bonding is a cosmetic procedure that allows the dentist to reshape or repair your smile using composite resin. Cosmetic bonding is particularly ideal if you’re insecure about the appearance of your smile or want an affordable alternative to invasive and more costly procedures such as orthodontics or veneers. With bonding, chipped or uneven teeth can be repaired easily and affordably, restoring your self-confidence. Additionally, bonding is often completed in a single visit and doesn’t require any anesthetic!
Veneers
Result: A shorter face that makes you look older. Solution: Veneers or crowns that restore natural tooth shapes and dimensions. Veneers are ultra thin pieces of porcelain that, when attached to the surface of existing teeth, become extremely strong. A crown goes over the entire tooth. Crowns are a better choice if your teeth are structurally weak because of fillings, root canals, etc. Sometimes increasing the length of only the upper teeth can create a dramatic improvement. Crowns and veneers can last at least 10 to 15 years and sometimes longer. Cost: Between $800 and $2,500 per tooth, depending on the part of the country where you live. Veneers and crowns are roughly the same price. Insurance rarely, if ever, covers any service performed strictly for esthetic reasons. However, if a tooth is structurally compromised, a crown may be covered as a necessary service.
Crowns
Even if you don’t break or “pop” a porcelain crown, it won’t maintain its original appearance forever. Example: The gums often recede with age. This can produce a thin gray or black line between the crown and the gum. Solution: Replace the crown. A lower-cost option is to use tooth-colored filling materials to fill the gap. It isn’t as durable or as attractive as a new crown, but it’s a good choice for patients with limited funds.
Bridges
Dental Bonding
To begin, the dentist will isolate the teeth included in the procedure, etching them in preparation for bonding. After applying the etching conditioning liquid, the surface of the teeth will have small crevices that allow the tooth stronger adhesion with the bonding agent.

Root Canal Treatment
“On the streets I saw a lot of young people with missing teeth. There’s serious tooth decay,” he says. “There’s usually no money to do a root canal and cap, so they get pulled. The conditions are terrible.” There are dental colleges, but no license is required after graduation to practice. And there’s no agency to weed out the hacks. “They have to spend one year in a clinical setting,” Fier says of aspiring Costa Rican dentists. “After that they can hang out a shingle and they’re there.”

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Gingivoplasty. The dentist will use a laser and/or scalpel to give your gums a more even appearance that’s in harmony with your face.

Dentures
In Costa Rica, Fier talked about modern techniques for filling cavities and using bridges and dentures. In other countries, he has done procedures on patients, as local dentists looked on. “They are extremely thankful to receive the information,” Fier says. “But how it translates into everyday life, I don’t know. it’s hard to measure.”
