We make every possible effort to use locally sourced equipment, materials and business and support services. The bulk of my dental equipment was manufactured in Newberg, Oregon, by A-dec, one of the premier dental manufacturers in the world. Burkhart Dental, of Tacoma, Washington, is my supply company. Instead of sending my lab cases (crowns, bridges, etc) to a discount mail-order lab in Costa Rica or China, I work strictly with local dental laboratories. This not only keeps the dollars in our community, but allows me to maintain the highest quality control standards. We also do our banking locally.

Root Canal Treatment
Only completion of an ADA accredited residency program in a dental specialty allows a dentist to be recognized as a specialist. The most common dental specialties are endodontics (root canals), periodontics (tissues that support the teeth), prosthodontics (complex tooth replacement and rehabilitation), orthodontics (tooth movement), pediatric dentistry (dentistry on children and the developmentally disabled) and oral and maxillofacial surgery (surgery of the mouth and lower face). Most practitioners of the other recognized specialties — oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, and dental public health — practice in academic or public agency settings.

I’m a general dentist, which means I do all these things. All graduates of accredited U.S. dental schools are general dentists, qualified to offer comprehensive care. While some dentists choose to limit their practices to certain areas and refer out all the rest, I enjoy doing everything. So I do fillings, crown and bridge, implants, dentures. I clean teeth and treat the gums. I do root canals and extractions. I work on adults and kids. That being said, there are times when I need to refer complex cases in any area of dentistry to a dental specialist.

After dental school (again bucking tradition, I went to the University of Connecticut, instead of NYU), I completed a residency program in general dentistry (GPR) at the VA hospital in Long Beach, California. Carolyn, Hana, Jacob, Eden and I then moved up to Portland, where we found a house to rent in Ladd’s Addition. We so fell in love with the neighborhood that we bought the house! In 2010, after three years of I-5 commuting to a Kaiser Permanente Dental clinic, I decided to open the neighborhood practice I had previously only dreamed about!
