After frequent visits to my primary care doctors offiuce and minimal improvement, I decided to seek chiropractic treatment. That’s when I started treatment with Dr. Josh Dubin of Dubin Chiropractic. Dr. Dubin works regularly with medical doctors and physical therapists. Through muscle work, chiropractic adjustment and strength training I have noticed a great improvement in the symptoms I was experiencing. I found Dr. Dubin’s treatment to be safe with no discomfort as well as relaxing.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common occupational injury resulting from tasks that involve repetitive extension and flexion of the fingers, such as typing on a computer keyboard (Fig. 1).

Ultrasound
Low frequency ultrasound absorbs into soft tissues creating deep heat. Both ultrasound and electrical muscle stimulation are forms of biomecanical energy that aid in speeding up the healing process.

Sciatica
Sciatica is a condition in which the pain is typically perceived as radiating from the low back to the posterior buttocks, posterior thigh, and occasionally below the knee into the posterior calf and foot (Fig. 1). A disc herniation (Fig. 2B) or degenerative changes in the lumbar spine (Fig. 2C) can lead to sciatica. A normal, unherniated disc, in comparison, is shown in Figure 2A.

Lesions
Active Release Technique (ART) is one of the most effective deep tissue techniques for breaking down scar tissue/adhesions and restoring function and movement. Active release technique involves the doctor locating adhesions that are causing the problem, applying tension with the thumbs over these lesions in the direction of the fibers, and then having the patient elongate the musculature while the doctor continues to apply tension to the lesion. By breaking up the adhesions and restoring proper blood flow to the tissues, the patient’s condition will steadily improve. Dr. Dubin was the first doctor credentialed in Active Release Technique in Massachusetts. Active release technique protocols, combined with adjustments, strength training, flexibility training, and other modalities such as combotherapy, enable Dr. Dubin to have predictable treatment success when dealing with musculoskeletal injuries involving the spine or the extremities.

Dr. Dubin’s ability to utilize deep tissure massage techniques, stretching procedures, and manipulative therapy enables him to effectively treat those athletes suffering from repetitive motino strain type injuries. Due to his excellent reviews and feedback from the athletes, I have personally invited Dr. Dubin to once again be a member of the Team USA medical staff at the ITU World Duathlon Championships to be held in Germany this year.

Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendon injuries are painful and can seriously hamper a triathlete’s ability to train appropriately. The Achilles tendon is a strong, non-elastic, fibrous tissue on the back of the leg that attaches the gastrocnemius muscle (Figure 1A) and the soleus muscle (Figure 1B) to the calcaneus (heel bone). This tendon is surrounded by a paratendon, a thin delicate sheath. Ground-reactive forces associated with running may reach 6-8 times body weight with an average of 800 foot-strikes per mile. Under normal circumstances the Achilles tendon is able to adapt appropriately to increased workloads associated with running. However, certain risk factors may predispose the Achilles tendon to injury (Table 1).
