Primary Care
INSURANCES THAT REQUIRE PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS: If you have an insurance company that requires a Primary Care Physician to be chosen, it is your responsibility to be sure that it is correctly listed. We will not be able to see you at the scheduled time if the PCP is not correct.
Emergency Care
Urgent issues that cannot wait until morning when the office opens at 9 a.m. Routine questions and medication refills will be handled during normal office hours. Non-emergency calls that cannot wait until the next morning but do not require emergency services, should be made prior to 8 p.m. If you think that your child is getting sick, it is always better to call earlier in the day when we are adequately staffed to meet your needs and give you the opportunity to schedule an appointment if needed. The after-hours on call service is intended as a last resort before going to the emergency room. We ask that families call only when necessary; this helps to ensure that the provider on call is available in the event that you or someone else has an emergency.
Immunizations
Southern Tier Pediatrics Practice, P.C. follows the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines for immunizations. We know that keeping your child healthy is important to you, which is why immunizations are so important. The number of diseases that can be prevented by vaccines is increasing. If you have questions about which immunizations your child needs or are not sure if your child is up to date, please contact our office.

UPMC Chautauqua at WCA Hospital of Jamestown, NY uses a hospitalist service for pediatric inpatient care. You may be referred to UPMC Chautauqua at WCA Hospital for admission, laboratory, anesthesiology, pathology, radiology and/or surgical services. Upon arrival at UPMC/WCA, we recommend asking for the name, practice name, and telephone number of any health care provider scheduled to perform these types of services, as we do not typically have that information upon referral. Occasionally, patients are referred to another facility (such as a children’s hospital) for laboratory, anesthesiology, pathology, radiology, and/or surgical services. Again, we urge families to contact the hospital to get the name(s) and information for any health care provider scheduled to perform any of these services in order to ensure that insurance will cover such services as we do not always have that information at the time of the referral.

General Surgery

Skin Cancer
Being in shade will help reduce sunburn, skin cancer, and sun poisoning. In fact, it is still recommended to use sunscreen in the shade as you can still get some UV rays.
Eczema
Cow’s milk-based formula is the most commonly used. This type of formula is recommended by the AAP for “all infants who are not breastfed, or who are only partially breastfed, from birth to 1 year of age.” These formulas can be marketed with added ingredients. DHA and ARA are fatty acids that are thought to promote brain and eye growth. Probiotics are considered “healthy bacteria” which can aid in digestion, and prebiotics, such as “HMO,” may be of benefit in preventing eczema. Formula marketed to help with “reflux” has added rice. While some of these additives may be helpful, it is best to discuss these alternatives with your pediatrician prior to use.
