Pediatric Care
Dr. Eric Bran spent four years working in an ophthalmology practice and laser vision correction surgery center in New York City before coming to Ridgefield in 2003. He is a New Jersey native and attended Ithaca College, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology. Dr. Bran’s professional education was in Chicago at the Illinois College of Optometry where he earned his Doctorate of Optometry and Bachelor of Science in Visual Science. His specialty training included pediatrics, contact lenses and management of eye disease. His professional interests are in pediatric eye care, specialty contact lens fitting, LASIK surgery co-management, dry eye, sports vision and vision therapy.
Emergency Care
Retinal Detachment. In some cases, an injury or posterior vitreous detachment can cause the retina to tear or detach from the back of the eye. If this happens, you may see a significant increase in floaters and flashes, develop a dark spot in your vision, or even experience complete loss of vision. If this happens, go to the emergency room immediately. You'll need prompt treatment to reattach and repair your retina to restore your vision.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma. High pressure inside your eye causes glaucoma, which may damage the optic nerve. The nerve sends electrical impulses from the eye to the brain. If any part of the optic nerve is damaged due to glaucoma, you'll suffer permanent vision loss. Fortunately, it may be possible to prevent or reduce vision damage if glaucoma is detected early.

Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration. Macular degeneration affects the center of the retina, the light-sensing tissue at the back of the eye. The disease causes blurry central vision or a blank spot in your central vision. Macular degeneration is often referred to as "age-related" macular degeneration (AMD) since it usually affects older people.
Laser Eye Surgery
This non-surgical alternative to lasik surgery is very successful. A patient wears a contact lens to sleep, which gently molds the cornea into an eye with little or no prescription. Upon waking, the lens is removed and clear vision is achieved throughout the waking hours. This FDA approved procedure is an excellent way for children to reverse their prescription.
Cataracts
Cataracts. Cataracts dull your vision, cause haloes around lights and make it difficult to handle glare. These problems happen when the clear lens inside your eye becomes cloudy. The lens, a curved structure located behind your iris and pupil, changes shape to help you see clearly whether you're looking at a near or far object.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Abnormal Blood Vessels. Your optometrist may see abnormal blood vessels in your retinas when your eyes are dilated. The condition, called diabetic retinopathy, affects one out of three of US adults with diabetes over 40, according to the CDC. Diabetic retinopathy causes blood vessels to leak fluid or blood, interfering with vision. New blood vessels may also form. Unfortunately, the new vessels are often weak or abnormal and may leak. Diabetic retinopathy can cause blurred vision, faded colors, blank spots, and blindness.

Blepharoplasty
Dry eye syndrome is more common in women, possibly due to hormone fluctuations. Recent research suggests that smoking, too, can increase your risk of dry eye syndrome. Dry eye has also been associated with incomplete lid closure following blepharoplasty – a popular cosmetic surgery to eliminate droopy eyelids.

Skin Cancer
Spend Time in the Sun. Your body produces vitamin D when you venture outdoors on a sunny day. Unfortunately, most people don't get enough vitamin D through sun exposure alone. Doctors don't recommend that you use low vitamin D as an excuse to sunbathe though, as sun exposure increases your skin cancer risk.
Ulcer
If the abrasion becomes infected, you may develop an ulcer, or sore, on your cornea. Infected corneal ulcers are also treated with antibiotic drops, in addition to antibiotics (or antiviral or antifungal) drops.

He is a member of the American Optometric Association, the American College of Sports Medicine, the Sports Vision and Contact Lens Section of the American Optometric Association, and the Connecticut Association of Optometrists. He is also a former President of the International Academy of Sports Vision. Dr. Berman is the founder and present co-chairman of the Vision Management Group, a national think tank and study group of optometric practitioners.
Physical Therapy
Many vision problems do not require surgery for correction. In these situations, vision therapy is typically an option. Vision therapy is a form of physical therapy used on the eyes and brain. It is designed to resolve vision problems that can contribute to learning disabilities. This therapy can also be used an effective treatment for problems like lazy eye, crossed eyes, or double vision.
Occupational Therapy
It does work. Studies on vision therapy show it is effective in improving the lives of patients. Data shows that this therapy can improve visual function enough to keep it from interfering with a patient's ability to absorb information and learn. In its own sphere, this therapy is as effective as physical therapy or occupational therapy.
