The majority of patients are referred to our office through primary care physicians. Your urologist will review all the prior tests related to your symptoms. Often we will order or perform more specific tests, or procedures to establish your diagnosis. We then establish a treatment plan which may involve medication or surgery.
Family Practice
Dr. Whelan earned his Bachelorâ€™s degree in chemistry from Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL in 1997. In 2003, he received his MD from SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, IL. He was a recipient of the excellence in academic medicine research grant and completed a kidney cancer research fellowship at SIU in 2004. He completed a General Surgery and Urologic Surgery residency in 2009. He is board certified in Urology and a member of American Urologic Association. He serves as clinical assistant professor in surgery at UIC School of Medicine. He lives in Rockford with his wife Sarah Whelan, MD who practices family medicine. They have three children.

Bladder Cancer
The â€œconceptâ€ of using immunotherapy to treat bladder cancer has been around for many years. In 1990, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) for the treatment of early stage or superficial bladder cancer. Today this remains the standard of care for noninvasive high-grade bladder cancer. This medication is instilled into the bladder to encourage the patientâ€™s immune system to attack any cancer cells in the bladder and greatly reduces the risk of bladder tumor recurrence. We provide this treatment to many qualifying patients in our practice.
Urology
Dr. Fumo courageously took on the task with the assistance of Dr. Eden to perform a very large abdominal and kidney surgery on me. They removed very large cysts off my kidney, and they were cancer. Dr. Fumo and Dr. Eden saved me from not only losing any part of my kidney but they also saved me from cancer. Dr. Fumo came up to the hospital late the night of the surgery to check on me and came every day for four more days until I was discharged. Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are collections of mineral crystals that form in kidneys. Dehydration and poor dietary habits are the biggest risk factors. Sometimes stones become large enough to block the flow of urine from the kidney. This can be very painful. We treat stones with medication, sound waves, endoscopy, and laser treatment. We also educate patients on lifestyle changes to minimize stone recurrence.

Orchiopexy is an outpatient surgical procedure that corrects the position of undescended testicles and decreases the risk of developing fertility issues or testicular cancer later in life.

Interstitial Cystitis or (IC) is an inflammatory bladder condition that results in chronic bladder pain, pressure, and discomfort. Based on the severity, this condition can be very disruptive to oneâ€™s quality of life. Management requires a comprehensive approach and includes dietary changes, physical therapy, medication, and surgery.

A urinary tract infection (UTI) in children may affect any part of the urinary system (kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra) that can cause fevers, pain or burning sensations, cramping, increase in urination, or leakage.

Ultrasound
Hematuria or blood in the urine may be a harmless finding or a sign of a more serious problem in the urinary tract. We typically evaluate hematuria using imaging studies for the kidneys such as a renal ultrasound or CT scan. We evaluate the bladder with cystoscopy. This involves placing a small camera into the bladder to rule out any tumors or polyps that may cause hematuria.
MRI
Typically, PSA blood tests and biopsies are used to detect prostate cancer. Imaging of the prostate using MRI has also improved cancer detection, but roughly 30% of significant prostate cancers are still missed with this approach.
Computed Tomography
In adults, renal cell carcinoma is the most common form of kidney cancer. Symptoms of renal cell carcinoma may include abdominal/back pain or blood in the urine. However, the majority of kidney cancers are found incidentally on CT scan imaging.
Chemotherapy
Cancers that have spread outside the prostate are treated with medicine. This may involve hormone injections, immunotherapy, or chemotherapy.
Radiation Therapy
More aggressive prostate cancers are treated with surgery or radiation therapy. Surgery involves the removal of the prostate. This is most often done using a laparoscopic technique using the DaVinci Robotic system. Radiation therapy uses high energy rays to kill cancer cells in the prostate. Radiation can be given from a machine outside the prostate by placing dozens of radioactive seeds into the prostate with needles.

Dr. Eden practices all aspects of adult general urology with a specific focus in minimally invasive robotic surgery for prostate and kidney cancer. She earned her Bachelors Degree from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois, graduating Suma Cum Laude in 2006. Dr. Eden then earned her Medical Degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington D.C. in 2011. She completed a General Surgery Internship along with a Urology Residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois in 2017. Dr. Eden, raised in Shannon, Illinois, now lives in Rockford with her husband and family. Personal interests include travel and spending time with family.
Vasectomy
Vasectomy is tying (with or without dividing) the tube that delivers the sperm from the testicle. This procedure is a safe, simple and effective procedure that makes a man sterile, or unable to father a child. This is a procedure that is performed in our office and generally takes up to 30 minutes to complete.
Robotic Surgery
Dr. Michael Fumo practices general urology with a special interest in all aspects of the treatment for prostate cancer and robotic surgery for the treatment of urological disorders. He has performed more than a thousand robotic surgeries for the removal of cancerous prostates. Doctor Fumo earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Chicago in 1997 and his Medical Degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine in 2001. He completed a Urological Surgery Residency at the Vattikuti Urology Institute, also at the Henry Ford Health Systems, a Robotic Urologic Surgery Fellowship, again at the Vattikuti Urology Institute, and was named Chief Resident, Urological Surgery, Vattikuti Institute at the Henry Ford Health Systems from 2006-2007.
Laparoscopy
Dr. Taylor practices general urology with a specific focus and advanced training in minimally invasive robotic and laparoscopic surgery and complex kidney stone disease. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2004. He then earned his Medical Degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, distinguished by acceptance into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He then completed a General Surgery Residency along with a Urology Residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois and was named Chief Resident, Urology, from 2012-2013. Dr. Taylor then completed a Clinical Fellowship in Laparoscopy and Endourology at the University of California San Francisco in San Francisco, California from 2013 to 2014. Dr. Taylor was raised in Lanark, Illinois and now lives in Rockford with his wife and family. Personal interests include spending time with his family and enjoying the outdoors.

Skin Cancer
Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. Symptoms of prostate cancer may include difficulty with urination or blood in the urine. However, the majority of prostate cancers are found by early detection through PSA screening. PSA is a blood test used to detect prostate cancer. When elevated, a prostate biopsy may be performed to diagnose prostate cancer. Risk factors for prostate cancer include older age and family history.
