Always goes out of his way for our family. My daughter had an emergency broken tooth. He was able to diagnose over face time and the girls in the office took great care to get my daughter looking and feeling back to normal for her event that night. Dental Examination
Periodontal disease is diagnosed by your dentist or dental hygienist during a periodontal examination. This type of exam should always be part of your regular dental check-up.
X-rays
Digital radiography (digital x-ray) is the latest technology used to take dental x-rays. This technique uses an electronic sensor (instead of x-ray film) that captures and stores the digital image on a computer. This image can be instantly viewed and enlarged helping the dentist and dental hygienist detect problems easier. Digital x-rays reduce radiation 80-90% compared to the already low exposure of traditional dental x-rays.
Oral Cancer Screening
Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.

Teeth Cleaning
Once your periodontal treatment has been completed, your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend that you have regular maintenance cleanings ( periodontal cleanings ), usually four times a year. At these cleaning appointments, the pocket depths will be carefully checked to ensure that they are healthy. Plaque and calculus that is difficult for you to remove on a daily basis will be removed from above and below the gum line.
Fluoride Treatment
Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.

Root Canal Treatment
Also among the more common forms of neuropathic orofacial pain is atypical odontalgia. This condition, also known as phantom tooth pain, may follow a dental procedure such as a root canal or an extraction, and is experienced as a pain like a toothache with no actual problem in the tooth.

Periodontal Surgery
If the pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce pocket depths, making teeth easier to clean. Your dentist may also recommend that you see a Periodontist (specialist of the gums and supporting bone).
Deep Cleaning
If the disease has progressed to more advanced stages, a special periodontal cleaning called scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) will be recommended. It is usually done one quadrant of the mouth at a time while the area is numb. In this procedure, tartar, plaque, and toxins are removed from above and below the gum line ( scaling ) and rough spots on root surfaces are made smooth ( planing ). This procedure helps gum tissue to heal and pockets to shrink. Medications, special medicated mouth rinses, and an electric tooth brush may be recommended to help control infection and healing.

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and also provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures. Implants provide excellent support and stability for these dental appliances.

Neuropathy to the inferior alveolar nerve or the lingual nerve occurs most often as a complication of a dental or medical procedure. Tooth extraction, usually of the wisdom teeth, is the leading cause of lingual and inferior alveolar nerve damage. It may also occur as a result of anesthetic injections for oral procedures. The result is pain and burning sensation, numbness or tingling of the tongue, mouth or lower lip.

I graduated from UC San Francisco Dental School and have been providing quality patient centered restorative dental care since 1982. Over the years, I have completed extensive advanced training in orthodontics, endodontics, dental implants, sleep disordered breathing, oral conscious sedation and comprehensive restorative care. However, there was always a group of patients that had orofacial pain (OFP) that were not completely addressed by traditional medical or dental care. These patients had real pain but could never find someone to see them as a whole person but rather a collection of symptoms. This is why I sought training at UCLA, the premier OFP program in the nation. I am currently the Assistant Director of the UCLA Postgraduate Orofacial Pain and Sleep Medicine program and as such, I am involved in research and instruction working with pain psychologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, physical therapists and complementary medicine specialists.
