Behavioral Counseling
Behavior problems such as separation anxiety, house soiling, leash reactivity, and resource guarding can have a significant negative impact on your bond with your pet. We discuss basic behavioral management such as potty training and socialization as a part of your pet’s routine veterinary care. For pets with more significant behavior concerns, we can schedule a full behavior consultation.
Nutritional Counseling
At St. Francis, we strongly believe in treasuring the end of life. Our hospice program has been built around this philosophy. We understand how difficult it is to watch your loved one age or to receive a terminal diagnosis for your beloved family member. Our compassionate, caring veterinarians and staff are here for you. We will provide the education you need to understand your pet’s medical condition and the treatment options that may be available. Hospice and palliative care therapy including pain management, anti-anxiety medications, and nutritional support will be discussed when appropriate. If you’ve already reached a decision to elect euthanasia, we will support you and guide you in that process.
Comprehensive Examination
Our behavioral consultations are scheduled for an extensive one-hour consultation. This allows our veterinarians to have adequate time to obtain an accurate, thorough history, perform a physical examination, perform appropriate diagnostic testing, and provide you with training and behavioral management recommendations for your pet.

In Minnesota, we primarily see heartworm disease, Lyme, and Anaplasmosis. Ehrlichiosis can be seen in Minnesota but is more common in the southern parts of the United States.
Pain Management
We know that having a pet undergo anesthesia creates some anxiety for their humans. At St Francis, we feel confident that we provide the most current anesthetic and pain management protocols tailored to your individual pet.
Vomiting Treatment

: Another tick-borne bacterial infection, anaplasmosis can lead to fever, joint pain, and lethargy. This organism infects platelets, and so can also lead to bleeding abnormalities.
Diabetes Treatment
This is a common endocrine disorder of both dogs and cats. It is characterized by a lack of insulin or an inability of insulin to function properly leading to an increase in blood glucose in the body. Increased water consumption, increased urination, increased appetite, and weight loss are the hallmark signs of diabetes mellitus. Other clinical signs may include a loss of appetite, weakness, depression, neuropathy, and abdominal pain. If these signs go unnoticed, pets may become severely ill. We can provide complete laboratory testing for the early diagnosis of this disease. Management of diabetes mellitus generally consists of dietary changes and insulin therapy, though our doctors will discuss the most appropriate therapy tailored specifically to your pet if your pet is diagnosed with this condition. Thyroid Disease Treatment

Heart Disease Treatment
Your pet is monitored with a pulse oximeter, an electrocardiogram (ECG), capnograph, and a blood pressure machine. Veterinary technicians are continuously monitoring and recording your pet’s heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, body temperature, and anesthetic depth.

Periodontal Disease Treatment
Our dental patients receive ultrasonic dental cleaning performed by highly skilled veterinary technicians. Any dental plaque/tartar is removed from the visible tooth surface as well as from below the gum line. Periodontal pockets are probed and measured to identify periodontal disease. Intra-oral digital dental radiographs are performed on any fractured, discolored, missing, or diseased teeth and evaluated by the veterinarian.
Cancer Treatment
If your pet is diagnosed with a cancerous condition, our compassionate and highly trained team of doctors and technicians will provide you with the resources that you need. We can provide surgical therapy if appropriate, and we have partnerships with excellent oncologists at Animal Emergency and Referral Center, Blue Pearl, and the University of Minnesota for advanced therapies such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Wound and Fracture Care
Our doctors regularly perform a wide variety of other soft tissue surgeries including laceration repair, biopsy of skin or masses, surgical management of abscesses, enucleation (surgical removal of an eye), hernia repair, and mastectomy (surgical removal of a mammary gland or chain).

Dental Surgery
If diseased teeth are discovered, surgical extractions of those teeth are recommended. In addition, our veterinarians will thoroughly inspect your pet’s oral cavity, tongue, gingiva, and lips. Any masses, oral lesions, or other abnormalities are biopsied (if warranted).
Veterinary Surgery
Exploratory surgery is most commonly indicated to remove a foreign body causing an obstruction within the intestinal tract. This may involve an incision into the stomach (gastrotomy) or intestinal tract (enterotomy) depending on the location of the obstruction. For more severe cases, a resection and anastamosis (i.e. removal of a segment of intestine) is necessary. Exploratory surgery may also be indicated to remove a tumor or to obtain biopsies of internal organs.

We offer spaying and neutering services for dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small mammals. Spaying and neutering prevents your pet from reproducing. In addition, spaying and neutering your pet generally leads to a longer life by protecting him or her from reproductive tract diseases and cancers involving the reproductive tract.

Laboratory Services
We offer complete laboratory diagnostic services provided through Idexx and Avian and Exotic Animal Clin Path Lab. We also have a comprehensive in-house laboratory allowing us to perform fecal exams, chemistry profiles, hematology, urinalysis, cytology, tick-borne disease screening, and cultures in-house for those patients requiring more immediate results.

Microchipping
We recommend the AVID microchip for your dog or cat. Microchips are placed beneath the skin between the shoulder blades. If your pet is lost, a microchip may help to guide their safe return home.

St. Francis is special because of its genuine passion. The goals and ethics of this clinic are focus on improving veterinary medicine for both pets and owners. I love working here because it allows me to be a part of a community that shares a deeper love for animals. I also love that our clinic has integrative services and has become very fond of our acupuncture patients. Especially since I have a soft spot for our senior pets and enjoy engaging in palliative care.
