Ophthalmology
Dr. Michael Pingree received his undergraduate degree from the University of Utah, majoring in Spanish. He then completed medical school at the University of Utah and subsequently finished his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin.
Macular Degeneration
Dr. Pingree specializes in cataract surgery and LASIK eye surgery. He practices family eye care and provides ocular disease management including glaucoma and macular degeneration.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. It uses a laser to shape or sculpt the front surface of the eye, the cornea. This sculpting is an attempt to optimize the way the eye focuses light on to the back of the eye, thereby creating clear vision.
Cataracts
A cataract is a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of the eye. Depending upon its size and location, it can interfere with normal vision. Most cataracts develop in persons over age 55, but they occasionally occur in infants and young children. Usually cataracts develop in both eyes, but one eye may have somewhat worse vision than the other. There is no way to prevent the development of cataracts and currently the only way to treat them is to surgically remove the natural lens in the eye.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is a procedure used to remove the natural lens in the eye when it becomes clouded, and replace it with an artificial lens in order to restore clear vision. Cataract surgery is indicated when the cataract impairs vision to the extent that it interferes with normal daily activities. Cataract extraction is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the world.
Eye Exam
When you come for your first eye exam at our office, you can expect to fill out paperwork (or you can download it and fill it out in advance by clicking here ). We will do some vision testing, neurological testing and ocular health testing. In most cases, your eyes will be dilated which allows the doctor to see the back of the eye to assess the retina and optic nerve. Some people prefer to have a driver to take them home if their eyes are dilated, but for most people, this will not be necessary. Most patients who come to our office for a complete eye exam can expect to be at our office about an hour.

It is a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that interferes with the body’s ability to use and store sugar, which can cause many health problems. Too much sugar in the blood can cause damage throughout the body, including the eyes.
