We have a part time nutritionist seeing patients in our office a couple half days a month. If you have been wanting to meet with one, now is the time. Sometimes insurance will pay for this consultation, but, if you insurance does not cover this types of service, she does accept cash. Her charge is $50 for the initial consultation, and $35 for follow ups. This is a great way to refresh if you need it for diabetic diets, celiac diets, general nutrition guidelines or ideas for weight loss. They can practice primary care throughout a patient’s lifetime. Subspecialties require additional training, called a fellowship, which lasts 1-3 years. For example, a cardiologist is an internist who specialized in heart disease. The world’s largest society of internists is the American College of Physicians. A Fellow of the ACP, or FACP, is a designation that recognizes a physician’s ongoing service and contributions to medical practice.

However, some family practice physicians exclude caring for patients who are pregnant, extremely young or who need significant surgery, which makes it easy to confuse them with internists.

Flu shots are available, and we encourage all our patients to get one, especially this year. While flu shots are not effective for COVID-19, they will help mitigate the flu, hopefully keeping our patients healthier and our local facilities more able to care for patients needing serious and urgent care.

Pregnancy
Gynecologists specialize in many issues related to the health of women’s female organs such as fertility, hormone disorders, menopause, menstruation, obstetrics (that is, pregnancy and childbirth) and sexually transmitted diseases. Since gynecology involves intensely personal issues, many women visit their gynecologist instead of a family physician. If they need to see another kind of specialist, they get a referral. Gynecologists can deal with a wide range of situations, including family planning and the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Internal Medicine
Pulmonologists are internists who diagnose and treat respiratory system diseases. After receiving a medical degree, pulmonologists complete a three-year internal medicine residency and may get certification for that work from the American Board of Internal Medicine. At that point, they are a fellow in pulmonary medicine. However, they still have to complete years of additional specialized training before passing exams to be board-certified in pulmonary medicine. More specialization is possible to help pulmonologists better understand diseases like COPD or asthma or to focus on specific patient demographics, such as patients who are children or elderly.

ID physicians diagnose infections and consider symptom severity and duration when talking with patients about the history of their disease. They are also interested in learning about any allergies, past medical problems, medications and, when relevant, social history. Once they understand a patient’s background, ID physicians examine patients for symptoms by considering basics such as blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate and temperature. They also often look rashes, enlarged lymph nodes and other observable symptoms that might be relevant to the situation. For example, they order blood tests, ask for imaging information (CT and MRI scans, ultrasound and X-ray), and gain information by using microscopes and cultures. Finally, they look at sensitivities.

Dermatology
After graduation from medical school, dermatologists serve a yearlong internship. They then must complete three years of residency working under the direction of experienced physicians as they learn how to identify and treat more than 3,000 specific conditions. They are expected to complete 12,000-16,000 hours of clinical care. They can then be board-certified. The most rigorous board certifications are given by the American Board of Dermatology, the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Board certification is shown by adding FAAD after the name of the physician, but this credential is also typically listed on a website. Some dermatologists specialize in specific age groups.
