Obstetrics
The use of ultrasound is common in obstetrics and familiar to many. In the shoulder and other joints, it affords an immediate, painless and inexpensive method of visualizing soft tissue areas that may be damaged such as rotator cuff, biceps tendon and bony areas. The device is portable and used in conjunction with a physical exam. Often, a diagnosis can be made without requiring the expense and time of an MRI. The ultrasound machine can also facilitate needle placement for certain injections done under local anesthetic in the office. We are currently using ultrasound in our office on a regular basis.

Ultrasound
New patient information sheets may be downloaded and completed prior to your visit, thereby saving time on the day of your appointment. Also, Dr. Sledge will need to review any imaging studies performed elsewhere pertaining to your condition such as MRI, plain XR, ultrasound and\or CT. Please bring copies of the films or CDs along with radiologist reports to your appointment to allow a complete examination in our office.
MRI
Dr. Sledge has extensive experience reviewing diagnostic studies obtained elsewhere and he incorporates his review of the reports available from radiologists with direct review of the films to confirm the diagnosis. Correlation in the past of MRI findings and subsequent surgical findings has given Dr Sledge the ability to enhance the value of these diagnostic studies in determining their actual clinical significance for each patient.
X-Rays

Joint Replacement
The shoulder joint can develop the loss of cartilage on the humeral head (ball) and glenoid (socket) leading to arthritis and attendant pain and limitation. Many patients respond well to non-operative treatments although occasionally shoulder joint replacement is used to alleviate symptoms. We refer patients to a shoulder specialist with current experience in joint replacement surgery.

Dr. Sledge's education in medicine began in 1981 at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas where he graduated in 1985 at the top of his class. He then studied Orthopaedic Surgery during his residency through the University of Texas Southwestern program in Dallas. In 1990, Dr Sledge completed a one-year Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship at the prestigious Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado training under Dr. Richard Hawkins, an internationally recognized shoulder specialist.
Physical Therapy
At times the shoulder joint capsule becomes inflamed and loses its pliability and elasticity, resulting in significant loss of mobility and the presence of severe pain. This condition often responds to physical therapy and other non-operative treatments.
