General Info
Al Larson Boat Shop opened when Al Larson originally leased waterfront land from the Banning Family, founders of the Port of Los Angeles, to commence a boat building and repair shop in 1903. The boat shop continued to grow in reputation for service as well as providing quality craftsmanship ever remaining small to medium size. Al Larson Boat Shop continued marine services in the Port of Los Angeles in the 1960s with a self contained shipyard with fully operational machine, carpenter, paint and welding departments serving the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, miscellaneous government agencies, off shore supply boats, commercial and pleasure craft. The facility swelled with work and employees during major Navy overhauls in the 1980s and 1990s, which diminished with the closure of the Long Beach Naval Base in 1997. With perseverance, Al Larson Boat Shop forged on to service commercial clients with a greatly reduced Navy work load. The facility remained small to medium in size with 75 to 100 employees and is one of the oldest privately-owned shipyard on the West Coast.
