Dr. Mackenzie has used pain pumps for years to help minimize the post-operative pain of certain procedures like breast augmentation which can be particularly uncomfortable. He has also been involved in clinical research on a sustained release non-narcotic medication for postoperative pain, which came to market as Exparel in April 2012. Dr. Douglas Mackenzie is a Board Certified plastic surgeon and performs plastic surgery procedures involving breast enhancement, body contouring, and facial rejuvenation. Dr. Mackenzie does most of his aesthetic surgery procedures on-site at South Coast Surgery Center in Santa Barbara, while reconstructive procedures are done at both South Coast Surgery Center and Goleta Cottage Hospital.
