Preventive Care

Dental Care
Rabbits and many other small mammals are particularly prone to dental problems. We offer complete pet dental care for the many problems that can occur.
Vaccination
Vaccinations are not only safe and effective; they are an important and fundamental piece of your pet’s preventative healthcare plan. Advances in veterinary immunology have made diseases that once were relatively common and fatal to pets easily preventable. There are also vaccines — such as for rabies and other zoonotic diseases— that help protect your family from very dangerous and difficult–to–treat illnesses. Additionally, with each passing year, veterinary science is improving on existing pet vaccines as well as increasing our ability to prevent an even wider array of contagious diseases.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dust Baths – Dust baths are important to help remove oil and dirt from your chinchilla’s hair coat to maintain their soft fur. The container must be large and deep enough for your chinchilla to roll over. Dust baths should be offered several times a week for 15-20 minutes at a time. Excessive bathing may lead to eye problems. There are many different types of chinchilla dust available. We recommend the Blue Cloud dust or Kaytee chinchilla dust. Any dust you use should be a fine powder.
Nutritional Counseling
Nectar (~50% of diet) – Many nectar substitutes are available in pet stores including Gliderade nectar supplement (Exotic Pet Nutrition Company, Newport News, VA), acacia gum powder, and nectar diets meant for lory birds.
Comprehensive Examination
The basis of any preventative medicine regimen is regular wellness exams. All Creatures Veterinary Care Center recommends a complete physical examination for your dog, cat, or exotic pet at least once a year, but more frequent exams are encouraged.

Parasites Treatment and Control
We recommend annual external and internal parasite control to protect not only your pet but your family as well. There are numerous oral and transdermal options with varying intervals of application. Our staff can discuss all the options available and develop a personalized program based on your pet’s risk of exposure.

We all hate to see our beaked, scaled, and fuzzy family members in pain. When they are, we’ll do virtually anything to help them feel better. At All Creatures Veterinary Care Center, we take immense pride in offering a wide range of pain management treatments in an effort to help your pet feel better as soon as possible.

Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Substrate – Deep bedding (at least 1 inch) with ample nesting material is recommended. Bedding must be clean, non-toxic, and absorbent. Paper pulp products (Carefresh or Yesterday’s News), shredded newspaper or shredded computer paper are recommended. Wood chips and shavings (especially cedar and pine) are NOT recommended as they can cause respiratory disease.

Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Wet Tail – Severe diarrhea resulting from a bacterial infection is called wet tail in hamsters. This is most commonly seen in young hamsters but can affect hamsters of any age. This is a very serious condition that can result in death within days after the onset of diarrhea. Other clinical signs include matting of the fur around the tail, an unkempt hair coat, a hunched stance, and loss of appetite.
Ear Infection Treatment
Everyday disorders such as lick granuloma and chronic ear infections that cause severe pain and discomfort are instantaneously relieved.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Each treatment lasts from two to eight minutes, depending on the condition, size of the patient, and other factors. For bilateral conditions, like hip dysplasia on both sides, the treatment time is doubled.

We perform routine and major soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery for exotic pets. Surgical support utilizes specialized exotic pet surgical and anesthetic monitoring equipment, ventilators, EKG and blood-pressure monitoring devices, microsurgical instruments, low volume IV fluid delivery systems, high-tech magnification systems, and heated surgical blankets.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Pellets – Young rabbits can have free choice alfalfa pellets until 8 months of age. After 8 months, switch to a timothy hay based pellet and offer daily in small amounts. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, and diarrhea.

Wound and Fracture Care
Calcium deficiency – If not fed properly, sugar gliders can easily become deficient in calcium. Calcium deficiency is very dangerous and can result in partial paralysis, bone fractures and/or seizures. To counteract this, calcium supplements and/or calcium-loaded insects are essential components of a sugar glider’s diet.

Dr. Michael Weiss founded All Creatures in 1997 and was one of the first hospitals in South Jersey that would see exotics. Dr. Weiss is a 1988 graduate of the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Rutgers University and studied Animal Nutrition at the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Weiss has extensive experience in emergency medicine & surgery, soft tissue & orthopedic surgery, ultrasound and endoscopy. His experience extends beyond dogs and cats to all exotic pets.

Cage mates – Rats should either be housed as individuals, in same-sex pairs, or in small groups. Fighting can occur and close monitoring is necessary. Spaying and neutering is recommended in mixed gender groups. There should be multiple food and water sources in group cages. If rats are kept individually, they should be handled every day.

Laboratory Services
Our animal care center is equipped with sophisticated instruments that allow us to measure many laboratory values. As a complement to our regular outside reference laboratory services, our in-house diagnostic capabilities allow us to get routine testing results during your wellness visit as well as non-wellness visits. Additionally, all pre-surgical testing, as well as emergency lab tests, can be performed within minutes. The rapid turn-around of both our outside lab and in-house lab allows animals to receive appropriate treatment in a timely manner.
X-Ray
Pet radiographs are useful in evaluating a number of areas of your exotic pet’s body, including bones, respiratory and cardiac systems, abdominal cavity, and more. Our exotic animal hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art digital radiography equipment, which enables our veterinary hospital to take high-quality, digital X-rays of your exotic pet in less than a minute, regardless of your pet’s size.
Microchipping
How would you find your pet if he or she ever got lost? Each year, millions of pets go missing and many don’t make it back home. Microchipping your pet is a safe, simple, and effective way to prevent this tragedy. About the size of a grain of rice, identification microchips are encoded with your pet’s vital information and implanted beneath your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. Microchipping will be discussed at your pet wellness visit.
